A Community Safety Advisor provides consultative and facilitative leadership and support in roles ranging from advocate, educator, convenor, capacity builder to coordinator. Community Safety Advisors are skill-based employees providing subject matter expertise in areas related crime prevention, community safety and sense of safety.


Duties - Union


Build community through working collaboratively, sharing ideas, and empowering people (individuals, groups, organizations, and networks) to make decisions that positively impact community safety and sense of safety Represent the City on boards and committees; present , promote and explain strategies to address safety issues, providing subject matter expertise and a direct liaison to the Community Safety Services Manager. Represent the City and convene external stakeholders (residents, neighbourhood associations, business, not-for-profits, ect.) to develop strategies to address a variety of community crime/safety related concerns. Utilize structured problem-solving and project management approaches, coordinate and oversee community safety projects of varying scope, including with partners, stakeholders, and consultants, to realize deliverables and identified outcomes. Manage internal project planning, processes, and related results. Demonstrate in depth knowledge of the local community, government ministries, the Criminal Justice System, Criminal Code of Canada, and related statutes. Interpret and apply applicable legislation municipal, provincial, and federal-bylaws, charters, policies and make recommendations as appropriate. Conduct research and data analytics of community safety and social disorder issues, and prepare and present briefing notes, strategies, reports, and statistics. Recommend the development of new bylaws, amendments, and crime prevention strategies; develop and present plans and recommendations to enhance crime prevention initiatives and community. Conduct Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) analyses as required by City of Kelowna departments, Kelowna RCMP and the community. Issues management related to responding to telephone, email and in person inquiries from the public, other departments, and external agencies. Generate, assign, review and respond to Service Requests and correspondence.

Diploma in related discipline (Community or Social Development, Criminology, Public Administration or equivalent) Bylaw Enforcement and Investigative Skills Level 1 and 2 (Justice Institute of BC or recognized equivalent) Experience BC Drivers License - Class 5 RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance
