Job Summary




Recreation Program Supervisor - Adapted & Inclusion assists in leading City-wide adapted and inclusion services. This position designs, develops, implements and supports the delivery of recreation adapted summer camps and programs, as well as inclusion and behavioural services. The Supervisor oversees staff recruitment, supervision, training, scheduling and performance evaluation for assigned staff. The role also supports outreach initiatives on behalf of the Recreation department to increase community participation and awareness of programs and events, as well as addressing day-to-day inquiries from the community. The Supervisor serves as a lead resource for adapted and inclusion programs and services at the City of Markham, acting as a main point of contact for behavioral crisis management, assisting in researching and developing services that align with current trends, liaising with community partners and delivering training in areas such as disability studies, child development, and behaviour management.





Hours of work: 35 hours, including shifts in evenings and weekends



Key Responsibilities & Duties:



Program Development, Planning, and Administration



Manage day-to-day operations of adapted and inclusion programs, including summer camps. Design, develop, and implement adapted programs; provide one-to-one participant support when needed. Ensure compliance with legislation, City standards, and policies. Complete required documentation (behavioral data, incident reports, program summaries). Assist with budget development, monitoring, and identifying capital needs. Forecast community needs using demographics and trends to maximize participation.

Inclusion and Behaviour Support Services



Coordinate and direct adapted/inclusion programs across the City. Support staff in understanding participant needs and inclusion best practices. Respond to and resolve escalated behavioral crises and emergencies. Collaborate with staff to create and implement individual support plans; monitor and adjust strategies. Liaise with participants, parents/guardians, and external stakeholders to arrange appropriate placement and support.

Staff Supervision, Guidance, and Training



Oversee recruitment, supervision, training, scheduling, payroll, and performance evaluations. Provide specialized training and coaching on inclusion and behavior management. Promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture through empathy, adaptability, and communication. Lead by example in applying inclusion best practices and conflict resolution strategies.

Outreach, Partnerships, and Community Development



Support outreach initiatives to increase community participation and awareness of programs. Act as liaison for City advisory groups and committees (e.g., Accessibility, Mayor's Youth Council). Represent the City with community stakeholders to assess needs, trends, and resources.

Other Duties



Perform additional related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience:



College Diploma or Trade Certification in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Education, Social Work, Child and Youth Worker, Autism and Behavioural Science, Child Psychology or a related discipline. Minimum 3-5 years full-time supervisory experience in in managing staff and/or volunteers. Strong knowledge and minimum of 2 years of experience working with individuals with a disability who exhibit challenging behaviours. Experience in varied recreation program areas such as camps, general programs and aquatics is an asset. Behaviour Management System Training (BMST) certification is required. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and/or Safe Management is an asset. HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development is an asset. Current Standard First Aid with CRP 'C' required. Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License in good standing and access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use, as travel between work locations is required. Requires the ability to lift/carry more than 30 pounds unassisted (and more with assistance). The role involves close physical proximity to participants and staff, including during crisis situations and personal care assistance for participant of all ages.
