Position Summary



The Community Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) works under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist to support clients in their homes and community settings. The OTA assists with implementing therapy programs, functional activities, mobility strategies, equipment training, and caregiver education aimed at enhancing independence, safety, and quality of life. The role supports individuals with physical, cognitive, developmental, or mental health conditions while ensuring safe and effective therapy delivery.

Key Responsibilities



1. Implementation of Therapy Programs

Carry out treatment plans developed by a supervising Occupational Therapist. Assist clients with therapeutic exercises, mobility training, activities of daily living (ADLs), and functional strengthening. Support cognitive therapy, memory strategies, and engagement in meaningful activities as directed by the OT. Provide reinforcement of energy conservation, pacing techniques, and safety strategies.
2. Client Support & Functional Training

Assist clients with practicing self-care activities such as grooming, dressing, feeding, and household tasks. Facilitate adaptive techniques to maximize independence. Assist with community reintegration activities (e.g., accessing appointments, using transportation) when permitted by the care plan.
3. Equipment & Assistive Devices

Set up, monitor, and provide training on mobility aids, adaptive equipment, and assistive devices under supervision. Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or changes in client function to the OT. Support clients and caregivers in the safe use of aids (e.g., walkers, grab bars, dressing aids).
4. Documentation & Communication

Document client interactions, progress, and observations in accordance with organizational policies and OT guidance. Communicate promptly with the supervising OT regarding changes in client status, safety concerns, or therapy outcomes. Maintain accurate visit logs and follow established care pathways.
5. Collaboration & Professional Conduct

Work collaboratively with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, personal support workers, and other team members. Attend team meetings or case conferences when required. Maintain professional boundaries and follow OTA/PTA practice guidelines and employer policies.
6. Homecare Requirements

Travel to client homes within assigned geographical areas. Provide care in a variety of home environments, adapting to client needs and safety considerations. Independently manage schedule and caseload within defined parameters.

Qualifications



Education & Certification

Completion of a recognized Occupational Therapist Assistant / Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) diploma program (or equivalent education). Knowledge of OTA/PTA standards and guidelines (e.g., from the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, as applicable).

Experience



Experience in community-based care, rehabilitation, geriatrics, or homecare is an asset. Experience working with individuals with physical, cognitive, neurological, or mental health conditions preferred. New graduates welcome with appropriate supervision structure.

Skills & Competencies



Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to follow treatment plans accurately and safely. Good problem-solving and observational abilities. Comfort working independently in community environments. Ability to motivate and encourage clients toward therapy goals. Competence with electronic documentation systems.

Additional Requirements



Valid Ontario driver's license and reliable vehicle for home visits. Current CPR/First Aid certification (as required by employer). Ability to safely assist clients with mobility and functional tasks. Clear background check / vulnerable sector screening, if required.

Work Environment



Client homes, retirement residences, community settings. Variable schedules depending on client needs; may include evenings or weekends. Independent work with ongoing supervision and support from a Registered Occupational Therapist.
