The Opportunity:





Are you a skilled relationship builder with a deep understanding of Gitxsan culture, history, and the Wilp governance system? Do you possess a profound respect for Gitxsan Ayook (laws) and the lax yip? Do you have profound respect for the land, water, and natural environment, and a demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship and the protection of Lax Yip? Gitxsan Development Corporation is seeking a dedicated and culturally-grounded Gitxsan Community Liaisons to work directly with Gitxsan Huwilp within their Lax Yip.



These field based positions are integral to ensuring activities on the lax yip are conducted with respect for Gitxsan ayook. Working with Gitxsan Environmental Services and other contractors operating on the lax yip liaisons will accompany fieldwork, including archaeologists, wildlife biologists, fisheries biologists, vegetation ecologists and soil specialists. Must enjoy working outdoors.


Key Responsibilities:




Serve as a primary point of contact for Gitxsan wilp regarding operations, projects, and intentions within their Lax Yip. Ensure transparent, accurate, and culturally appropriate dissemination of information to wilp members. Translate complex technical information into easily understandable language for wilp members, and conversely, effectively convey community insights and concerns to internal teams. Educate internal teams on Gitxsan history, culture, governance, and the importance of respectful engagement. Identify and help resolve potential issues or conflicts with sensitivity and a commitment to amicable solutions, consistent with Gitxsan principles. Identification of environmental resources (such as fish, wildlife or vegetation or important habitats). Assist in any and all aspects of fieldwork including operation of equipment (ie., ATV, snowmobiles) Work safely and abide by the all applicable Safety Programs Carry equipment as required Participate in tailgate meetings Record keeping and reporting

Competencies and Skills-Sets Required:




Have an interest in biological, ecological or cultural inventories Physically fit.

Designations and Training Required:




Satisfy all drug and alcohol screening requirements Hold a clean Drivers License Hold a Level 1 First Aid Certificate

Qualifications & Experience:




Deep understanding of Gitxsan culture, history, traditions, and the Wilp (House Group) governance system is essential.

Lived experience within Gitxsan communities and established relationships with Wilps are highly valued. Fluency in Gitxsanimaax (the Gitxsan language) is a significant asset. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trust and rapport with diverse community members, including Elders, Youth, and Simgiigyet. Exceptional interpersonal, communication (oral, written, and cross-cultural), and presentation skills. Strong active listening skills and a demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive discussions with diplomacy and cultural competence. Knowledge of Canadian Indigenous rights, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and its application in British Columbia (e.g., DRIPA). * Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, demonstrating adaptability and cultural sensitivity.
