Job Description


Dalhousie Legal Aid was the first legal Service for low income communities in Nova Scotia and is the oldest clinical law program in Canada. It is also the only community law clinic in Nova Scotia. The Clinic is a unique partnership of community groups, law students, community legal workers and lawyers working together and is operated by the Schulich School of Law. Dalhousie Legal Aid Service\'s community-based office is located in a north-central neighborhood of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Community Legal Worker (Eviction Prevention) will be responsible for building and re-establishing community connections with other service providers; creation of simple, user-friendly, accessible informational materials; and regularly reviewing and updating existing and new materials to ensure they are legally accurate.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver training sessions for other service providers, student groups, and community organizations, focusing on all stages of housing insecurity with a goal of eviction prevention and early dispute resolution.
  • Serve as a navigator between services to ensure people land where the best help is available.
  • Develop law reform and advocacy strategies aimed at eviction prevention and the promotion of tenants\' rights.
  • Support and assist our current social justice team with intake and service.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong communication skills and knowledge of anti-oppressive practice.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience working with, and understanding of, communities experiencing poverty and marginalization.
  • Understanding of the housing climate in the Halifax region as well as the Residential Tenancies Act and procedures.
Assets
  • A law degree is not necessary and any applicant with a law degree must not have practicing status at the bar. Those without law degrees are encouraged to apply.
  • Teaching or mentoring at a university or adult level.
  • A solid track record of advocacy and knowledge of the above-noted administrative law areas.
  • Experience assisting people before administrative tribunals.
