Position Summary
Wachiay Friendship Centre is seeking a
Community Law Advocate
to provide advocacy, legal information, and support to community members in a culturally sensitive manner. The Advocate will assist clients with civil law issues such as landlord/tenant disputes, income and disability assistance, indigenous status applications, employment, and human rights. This position involves both direct support to clients and indirect services such as legal education, research, and systemic advocacy in certain areas.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assess case merit and provide services or referrals to other agencies.
Negotiate with third parties by phone or written correspondence on behalf of clients.
Provide advocacy for individuals with community law matters.
Share legal information through conversations, brochures, forms, and online resources.
Assist clients in completing government forms where appropriate.
Track limitation dates and manage a calendar to ensure deadlines are met.
Maintain accurate, organized client files with records and correspondence.
Conduct legal research, consult with a supervising lawyer, and prepare written legal submissions.
Represent clients before tribunals where appropriate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic understanding of administrative law and court processes.
Familiarity with legislation related to community law issues such as Residential Tenancy Act, Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act, and the Human Rights Code.
Comfortable supporting people experiencing strong emotions and negotiating through intense conflictual situations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experienced with culturally sensitive and trauma informed practice.
Technological proficiency in a range of document preparation and organization programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, Clio, Bitwarden, and Bitlocker.
Ability to conduct research and prepare written legal submissions.
Education, Experience, and Training
Education:
Post-secondary education an asset.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years in a law office or related field (e.g., Court Services).
Training:
Ongoing professional development provided through workshops and conferences.
