L'sitkuk (Bear River) First Nation is a smaller Mi'kmaq community located 3 km from the village of Bear River. The Bear River First Nation Health Center serves approximately 300 band and community members. We are looking for a key member of our health team. Purpose of the Position:



As our Community Health Nurse, you would be responsible for managing the delivery of various public health programs and services and working as part of the health team to develop and deliver various health and wellness programs and services. You would be working in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Department of Health, Indigenous Service Canada, Tajikeimik, and other L'sitkuk departments. Your role will include providing health education, promotion and reporting in the following areas but not limited to: Communicable Disease Control, Immunization, Pre/Post Natal, School Health Education, Home Care Nursing as well as supervising the Home and Community Care Program.

The Community Health Nurse provides nursing services to people of the Mi'kmaq community. The Community Health Nurse operates as a member of the Health Center's collaborative care team and acts as a liaison. The day-to-day accountability for this role will be to the Health Center Director. Commitment to cultural competence and cultural safety is required. Local travel is required.

Key Responsibilities:



Delivery, implementation, evaluation and reporting of key programs. Assists with Doctor and Nurse Practitioner Days. Provides wound care and nursing services (home visits will be required). Functions as part of multi-disciplinary teams. Attending meetings and training. Participates in ongoing cultural safety learning and practice. Participates in local cultural and community activities as appropriate to facilitate relationship building and community engagement and improve cultural awareness. Assists in program planning, quality improvement and program evaluation, as required. Maintains appropriate documentation in accordance with the policies of Band and standards of professional practice. Participates in relevant administrative and professional development activities of the Health Centre.

Qualifications:



Hold a valid NS Registered Nurse licence. Registered or eligible for registration and a member in good standing of the relevant regulatory body. Experience working in First Nation Communities is an asset, but not required. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Mi'kmaq culture. Demonstrated knowledge of the impacts of historical and intergenerational trauma, the impacts of residential schools and the inequities faced by First Nations Communities. Knowledgeable and experienced in delivering culturally safe, and evidence informed treatment modalities. Demonstrated ability to develop effective linkages with other health, social service, and education agencies as appropriate. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team as well as independently. Strong organization and prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively required. Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills required. Access to reliable transportation. Good attendance and work record.

Hours of Work:



Monday - Thursday 8:30-4:00pm

Friday- 8:30am- 12:00pm

Requires flex time and home visits.

Schedule:

Monday to Friday Weekends as needed
