PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Senior Nurse/Hwialusmutul' Program Manager, the purpose of the Community Health Nurse is to provide communicable disease control services such as immunization, disease prevention and outbreak management; family wellness care services including pre and post-partum and early childhood enhancement services, and education through community outreach on a range of youth, women's and adult health concerns to individuals and community. This is a full-time permanent unionized position that works primarily in the office with moderate local travel required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $51.66 - $54.05 per hour ($94,024.16 - $98,366.39 annually).

RESPONSIBILITIES:



Provide Communicable Disease Control:



Promote and administer recommended immunizations to all community members

Interpret laboratory results and public health monitoring regarding communicable disease

Consult and collaborate with local and provincial bodies to plan for intervention, family education, and protective action

Conduct surveillance and screening activities

Follow orders to dispense tuberculosis treatment

Diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications for sexually transmitted infections as per BC Center for Disease Control using standard decision support tools for certified nurses

Provide health information about prevention and treatment options

Ensure accurate documentation in electronic medical records

Ensure culture safety of all clients when receiving services

Provide Family Wellness Care Services:



Work within a multidisciplinary team to

Provide testing, information and consultation for pregnancy and contraception

Provide prenatal and postnatal education and support to community members with individual and team led encounters

Support and promote breastfeeding

Conduct neonatal and child development assessments through use of a variety of assessment tools

Provide general health information regarding a variety of health-related topics with a view to promotion of self-advocacy, honoring the medicine, strength and wisdom each person carries

Refer to internal and external services as needed

Collaborate with agencies, health professionals and institutions serving our members

Educate Members Through Community Outreach:



Conduct home visits to promote program services

Conduct harm reduction practice and overdose prevention education

Coordinate school visits as requested

Participate and assist in coordination of community engagement activities

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Member of the BC College of Registered Nurses and Midwives is required

2 years community health nursing experience is required

Certification in First Aid / CPR Level 1/Foodsafe is an asset

BC Communicable Disease Control Immunization Certification will be required

Experience working with perinatal families is an asset

Experience working in an Indigenous community, and a willingness to learn about culture, customs, and traditions of Cowichan people

BC Class 5 Drivers' License, Drivers Abstract and reliable vehicle

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



Knowledge of Cowichan culture, customs, and traditions

Knowledge of historical trauma, systemic barriers and other social determinants that influence the health of Indigenous peoples

Knowledge of internal and external community resources

Knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention techniques

Well-developed written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Time management and organizational skills

Able to foster and build relationships with coworkers and community members
