The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Community Engagement Strategist

This is a hybrid position that requires in-person work at UBC Okanagan\xe2\x80\x99s Okanagan campus in Kelowna, typically three of five days a week.

Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Public Affairs, within the University Relations team, this position supports and furthers UBC Okanagan\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to build mutually beneficial, cooperative, lasting relationships with a variety of communities across the Okanagan and beyond, with a particular focus on relationships that advance the university\xe2\x80\x99s strategic priorities. This role is responsible for developing a high-level community engagement strategic plan, which includes the planning, development and implementation of community outreach initiatives and stakeholder engagement.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Associate Director, Public Affairs and works collaboratively with colleagues within the University Relations portfolio as well as stakeholders across the university and the community.

Work Performed

  • Builds a community engagement strategy for UBC Okanagan that aligns with the campus\xe2\x80\x99 strategic priorities, goals, objectives and action plan to enhance UBCO\xe2\x80\x99s reputation and relationships with our communities and stakeholders. Further, this position implements and executes these strategies and initiatives.
  • Works to showcase faculty, staff and student research, teaching and learning activities and achievements as part of UBCO\xe2\x80\x99s community outreach.
  • Maintains and grows a stakeholder database, including developing an internal process to proactively manage the stakeholder information and relationships to increase the success of high-level university projects, initiatives and events, which may include a multi-unit approach and conducting research and analysis to identify the needs, interests and expectations of external stakeholders.
  • Stewards and nurtures existing and new relationships with various stakeholders, including local organizations, government agencies, businesses and the public.
  • Facilitates and oversees university-community partnerships, agreements and initiatives. And importantly, encourages the involvement and collaboration by aligned department and units.
  • Oversees the sponsorship program including long-standing university-community sponsorship agreements, seeks new external sponsorship opportunities in alignment with campus priorities and reviews incoming sponsorship requests and makes recommendations for support.
  • Identifies university-community story opportunities with meaningful impact and collaborates on content development with the Public Affairs and Marketing and Communications teams.
  • Establishes and maintains key metrics to measure the impact of the UBCO and community engagement efforts, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of these efforts, and contributes these metrics to institutional reports and proposals.
  • Organizes and participates in meetings, information sessions, showcases, campus tours and other events tied to community engagement. Related responsibilities will include, at times, forming and leading committees, communications support, facilitation and managing logistical aspects of the events, and providing a campus tour.

Qualifications

Minimum
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of five years\xe2\x80\x99 experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one\xe2\x80\x99s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one\xe2\x80\x99s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred
  • Experience building relations with all levels of an organization, community leaders and individuals, demonstrating the ability to establish a high level of rapport, and utilize judgment and sensitivity in presenting opportunities and issues.
  • Experience with database management and CRM software is preferred.
  • Experience with fund or grant programs support, preferably in a not-for-profit or post-secondary education sector is valued.
  • Experience as a member of or collaborator with Indigenous communities and Indigenous-led organizations preferred.
  • Professional experience in both the university environment and/or community sector preferred. Familiarity with community engagement in higher education preferred.
  • Working knowledge of event management is valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and develop engagement and consultation plans, and construct and execute tactics to support the plan.
  • Able to quickly grasp the scope of complex issues and the potential impacts on the organization.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate groups to achieve appropriate outcomes and develop/deliver effective presentations and workshops.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact and discretion and effectively manage sensitive or controversial issues.
  • Possesses a collaborative, team-focused working style while self-sufficient and self-motivated.
  • Takes ownership of programs and tasks. Is flexible and can manage changing priorities within a dynamic work environment.
  • Comfortable with having assumptions challenged; willing to learn and adapt.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication.
