The John Howard Society of PEI is anticipating the need for a passionate and motivated Community Engagement Housing Specialist to join our team. As a Community Engagement Housing Specialist, you will play a vital role collaborating with landlords and community organizations to identify and obtain or retain safe, stable and affordable housing for homeless Youth. Key Duties/ Responsibilities:
Reports directly to the Wrap Around Housing Program Manager
Support Youth to find and secure housing through promotion and collaboration with landlords and community organizations
Establish positive community and landlord relationships that will foster successful placements and housing stability
Serve as liaison for local landlords and community organizations along with the Youth they support
Establish a pool of rental properties in our service areas to then rapidly rehouse homeless Youth
Work with landlords to negotiate rent or move-in deposits on behalf of the clients and facilitate positive landlord-tenant relationships
Assist with the development and implementation of landlord engagement materials and events
Provide housing search assistance to caseworkers and Youth
Travel to housing sites to engage landlords and property managers
Complete and maintain documentation with any client casenotes recorded in the HIFIS database
Support data collection and reporting for the Wrap-Around Program
Other duties may be required
Key Skills Required:
Knowledge of landlord-tenant laws and fair housing practices.
Ability to build rapport and maintain positive relationships with landlords.
Possess a working knowledge of local housing providers, developers and property management companies
Understands housing and homelessness based on the Housing First Model
The ability to work with Youth and understand their needs
The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
The ability to organize, prioritize and multitask
The ability to problem-solve creatively
The ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude
Strong communication skills, both written and oral
Proficient with technology (electronic databases, computer programs and software, cloud-based drives)
Familiarity with local, Provincial, and Federal resources an asset
Excellent interpersonal skills
Demonstrable initiative and drive to seek housing and implement change
Represent/promote the organization in a positive manner within the community
Qualifications:
University degree in human services or business and/or post-secondary education and certification in the field of human services or business or an equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 2 years experience with local housing providers, developers or property management companies or related work experience
Experience working with marginalized populations preferred
CPR- First aid certified or willing to be trained
Criminal record check is required
Must have a valid Prince Edward Island driver's license and have access to reliable, insured transportation.
Must be willing to commute to client and organization locations outside the office.
Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
