Salary Range: $68,700 - $76,400 annually

Location: 9 Village Road, Southampton, Ontario N0H 2L0

Zaag'idiwin Child and Family Services is a newly established organization dedicated to promoting the wellbeing of Saugeen First Nation children and families and building capacity to operationalize Saugeen's child wellbeing law, Zaag'idiwin. We believe in collective responsibility, transparency, and engaging our community through meaningful communication and involvement.

Position Overview

The Community Engagement and Communications Specialist will play a central role in enhancing community engagement, developing and implementing communication strategies, coordinating events, and managing social media channels to ensure clear, consistent, and culturally respectful communication.

This position will focus not only on digital and written communications, but also on building strong relationships with families, Elders, youth, and partners by leading community engagement activities and coordinating events that bring people together to celebrate, learn, and share. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable behind a computer creating social media campaigns as they are on the ground organizing cultural gatherings, community meetings, or family wellbeing events.

Key ResponsibilitiesCommunity Engagement & Events Coordination

Plan, organize, and deliver community events such as cultural celebrations, workshops, feasts, and information sessions.

Work closely with program staff to coordinate logistics for events (venue, food, scheduling, promotion, transportation).

Engage Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and families in planning and participation.

Act as a liaison between the organization and the community to strengthen relationships, gather input, and share resources.

Represent Zaag'idiwin at community events, ensuring respectful and positive engagement.

Communications & Media

Develop and implement communication strategies to support organizational goals and community engagement.

Manage and create content for social media channels, newsletters, website, and other communication platforms.

Ensure communications are culturally safe, inclusive, and reflect community values.

Prepare press releases, speeches, reports, and promotional materials for internal and external use.

Track engagement metrics and prepare reports on communication outcomes.

Collaboration

Work with leadership to ensure communication is consistent and aligned with Zaag'idiwin's mission and values.

Highlight community successes, program updates, and cultural events through storytelling and media.

Build positive working relationships with media, partners, and stakeholders to promote awareness of Zaag'idiwin programs and services.

Other Duties

Support staff and programs in promoting their initiatives to the community. Contribute to overall organizational growth and cultural visibility. Other related duties as assigned to support the success of Zaag'idiwin Child and Family Services.

Qualifications

Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Event Planning, Marketing, or related field.

Experience in communications, media relations, or community engagement roles.

Experience planning and coordinating community events, including logistics and outreach.

Strong writing, editing, and content creation skills for both print and digital platforms.

Knowledge of Indigenous communities, cultures, and traditions, particularly Saugeen First Nation.

Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

Proficiency with digital tools including social media, website management, and graphic design software.

Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently.

Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed for events.

A satisfactory Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
