Job Description

As an Alberta Ballet Community Dance Program Lead, you will support youth to reach their full potential by teaching accessible and inclusive ballet/dance classes in Fort McMurray and other communities in northern Alberta. This program supports our vision to serve all Albertans and support a more equitable and inclusive society by using arts participation to close the gaps in social, health and economic outcomes. This position will also contribute to the planning, management, and evaluation of these dance classes focussing on the health and wellness outcomes (strengthened physical health, mental health, self-confidence, sense of belonging, social behaviours, and creative movement and expression).


Schedule:



Weekday evenings, Saturday daytime hours

Summer (July / August) - summer camp and sessional classes - daytime hours


Purpose:

Teachers provide students with quality instruction in a caring and engaging environment that promotes creativity and expression, joy of movement and music and develops a lifelong appreciation for dance and the arts.


Key Deliverables




Instructional Duties:


Act as the primary onsite instructor for community outreach dance programming in Medicine Hat and other Alberta communities.

Plan and teach ballet, dance, and creative movement classes following Alberta Ballet's System of Training. Follow all teaching outlines and guidelines set out in the teacher handbook.

Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships. Participate in regular professional development through Alberta Ballet, Alberta Ballet School, or other appropriate programs / courses. Communicate with parents as needed and note key details of conversations, including date and action items. Notes may support follow-up, student wellbeing, or help resolve future concerns.

May be asked to participate in media interviews to promote outreach programming (with support from Alberta Ballet's Communications team).

Other duties as required



Administration & Planning:

Logistics coordination including schedule development, working with venues to book space, identifying equipment needs and rentals, contracting local pianists, booking your own travel and accommodations, etc. Working with the Community Liaison, establish and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with external partners to deliver programming. Participate in consultations with Alberta municipalities and community-serving groups to recommend thoughtful, innovative dance programming that supports and reflects their needs. Assist Community Liaison with monitoring and evaluation of programming to recommend improvements and support impact reporting.



Ongoing Professional Development

:
Stay informed of trends in dance education in relation to social impact and social determinants of health. Participate in ongoing training to deepen understanding of the challenges faced by the populations we serve and apply learnings to Outreach Class environment and dance curriculum.



Experience and Desired Skills

:

Degree in Dance or teaching credentials from a reputable training method or organization, or equivalent experience.

Minimum of 3 years working as a youth dance instructor Experience instructing in a non-competitive dance environment and/or experience working with vulnerable youth in any setting is considered an asset. (Vulnerable youth includes those who have a lack of personal and financial resources, are involved in social service systems, struggle with mental health, have experienced trauma, identify as LGBTQ2S+, and/or immigrants) Experience teaching with live music. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build relationships with students, colleagues and external partners and represent the Alberta Ballet brand in a professional manner. Minimum of 1 year experience working in an administrative or professional environment and comfort with Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Teams)

Strong schedule and project management skills with the ability to coordinate logistics for class planning. Must have flexibility with working hours to accommodate travel and work on evenings and weekends. Must have a Valid Driver's License and have access to a personal vehicle. Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid police background, criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

.

Successful candidates will be required to complete Respect in Sport Certification (supported by the Company).





Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:




This job is performed at different venues in a variety of settings. May includes travel via airplane or car and staying overnight in hotel accommodations. Teaching - standing for long periods of time, repetitive movements, demonstrating dance. Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Lifting and setting up of barres or other studio equipment when necessary. Speaking for long periods of time, voice and speech indicating tempo, rhythm and quality Due to some computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists. Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations.

Successful completion of a criminal record and vulnerable sectors check Successful completion of Standard First Aid & CPR certification.
