The Opportunity
We are hiring a Community Connector (contractor position) to support newcomers in New Westminster. This role is part of a regional pilot funded by IRCC under the SDI stream. The project aims to improve access to services through neighbourhood-based outreach and collaboration.
As a Community Connector, you will help newcomers find and access services, build trust, and strengthen local connections. You will work closely with service providers and community partners to support inclusive and coordinated responses to newcomer needs.
What You'll Do
Conduct outreach to connect with newcomers who are not currently accessing services
Use various outreach methods, with a focus on street outreach, including:
- Walking routes through high-traffic areas and public spaces
- Visiting parks, libraries, community centres, and transit hubs
- Door-to-door outreach in residential buildings or newcomer-dense areas
- Attending local events, markets, and cultural gatherings
- Partnering and collaborating with the Welcome Centre
Share information about available services in culturally relevant and accessible ways
Provide direct local support and referrals
Build relationships with service providers and community partners
Help reduce barriers such as language, digital access, or fear of systems
Support small community gatherings and info sessions
Keep clear records of outreach activities, referrals, and feedback
Contribute to project learning and evaluation
Maintain a visible, welcoming presence in the neighbourhood
Other duties as required
What You Bring
We welcome applications from individuals with lived experience as immigrants, refugees, or newcomers, or those with strong ties to newcomer communities.
Required:
Lived experience as a newcomer to Canada
Knowledge of New Westminster and its local services
Experience supporting immigrant or refugee communities
Comfortable working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
Ability to build trust and strong relationships with both clients and service providers
Recognized and trusted within the community you aim to serve
Able to work independently and as part of a team
Fluent in English
Familiar with trauma-informed and inclusive practices (e.g., GBA+)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Willing to learn and navigate local services
Available for training, outreach, and project activities
Assets
Additional language skills
Experience in community development or advocacy
Familiarity with digital tools and social media
Knowledge of local service gaps or barriers faced by newcomers.

Valid First Aid Certificate (Basic Emergency First Aid with CPR-A or equivalent)
Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 36 months
Pay: $25.00 per hour
