JOB SUMMARY

Niagara Region\xe2\x80\x99s Community Services Department is seeking a summer student to assist with communications projects and initiatives in the department. Community Services assists some of the most vulnerable people in our community, from infancy to senior years, and is made up of 5 divisions:
  • Seniors Services (including Long Term Care)
  • Social Assistance & Employment Opportunities (SAEO)
  • Childrens Services
  • Homelessness & Community Engagement
  • Housing Services
This is an excellent student opportunity for someone enrolled in a related post-secondary program, who wants to work as part of a team that provides help to tens of thousands of Niagara residents each year. In addition to regular services, the department also has some exciting initiatives and projects on the go that the student will have the opportunity to participate in. Reporting to the Manager of Compliance and Community Engagement and under the guidance of our Corporate Communication Consultant, the student will assist with a variety of human services and communication support functions with an emphasis on video production. The placement is a professional, client-focus, highly confidential computerized office environment, providing support to departmental initiatives. The Communications student has the following responsibilities:
  • Implementation and evaluation of communication campaigns
  • Shooting and editing video
  • Organizing corporate social responsibility events
  • Internal and external communication focus
  • Research and write content for various materials (print, online, etc.)
  • Support departmental communication projects, as assigned
  • May assist with social media activities and online communication channels
  • Participate in meetings with internal and external stakeholders
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
EDUCATION
  • Currently enrolled in a related post-secondary program, such as Communications, Public Relations, Web Design, or related discipline
  • Enrollment in a co-op program is strongly preferred
  • Courses and/or training with related software, collaboration sites/tools, and website publishing (can be part of current program, or additional training/courses)

KNOWLEDGE
  • Clear understanding and knowledge of various communication, strategies and tactics to engage diverse audiences
  • Proficient with photography, video editing, and videography.
  • Solid understanding of industry best practices; such as ideal length of content, transitions, dynamic shots and formatting
  • Can operate and troubleshoot video equipment
  • Working knowledge of traditional communications products, including brochures, newsletters and media releases
  • Experience applying Canadian Press Style guides
  • Experience with social media
  • Knowledge of Community Services programs and services is an asset

  • Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Must be able to work in a highly confidential, human services environment
  • Must have video editing experience in a PC environment.
  • Proficient with Adobe products, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premier Pro.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary program (co-op program is strongly preferred)
  • Must be available to start work for the summer term (May \xe2\x80\x93 August)
  • Work is full time, Monday \xe2\x80\x93 Friday, 8:30am \xe2\x80\x93 4:30pm
