The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a full-time permanent Communications Officer. The candidate would perform a wide variety of tasks, with a focus on social media management, newsletter and report writing, basic graphic design, event planning and photography. This position will create print and online communications, monthly email marketing, ongoing website management and content development and other media projects. This person is expected to be creative, collaborative, task oriented, and a good problem solver, with a willingness to learn new things on a daily basis.
Duties and Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Implement approved communication plans, programs and initiatives, as directed by the Manager of Communications
Efficiently and accurately manage the Band website and social media pages, across several platforms
Liaise with Band staff on communications requests, and co-develop content to support department presentations, advertisements, website posts and digital content, newsletters and annual reports, with the support of the Communications manager
Complete deliverables of the weekly and annual communications calendar
Work with external suppliers to purchase or prepare cost estimates, and ensure communication products are produced and delivered in a timely manner
Document community events, with photos, video and social media updates
Plan, coordinate, and execute special projects, displays, and events etc. as directed by the Manager of Communications
Ensure outgoing communications are in line with the strategic priorities of the Lax Kw'alaams Band council and administrative departments
Participate fully and meaningfully in the annual employee performance review, as outlined in the Human Resources Manual
Perform all other tasks assigned by the Manager of Communications and Public Relations
Education, Experience and Knowledge
Excellent written communications skills, including editing and email communication
Training in Communications or a related field is an asset, however training will also be provided
At least 2 years of related work experience in communications or business administration
Experience in supporting communications on behalf of an organization, especially through social media (example: student or adult sport team, fundraising committees, community events, volunteer groups)
Experience in organizing and advertising events (example: team sporting events, fundraising events, community events, volunteer events)
Time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to juggle multiple and sometimes competing priorities simultaneously.
Highly organized and detail oriented
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Canva, and Adobe Creative Cloud products
Basic knowledge and high level of comfort with social media account and platform management and digital marketing tools, in particular Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, WordPress, Google Analytics, Google Workspace etc.
Able to accept and implement constructive criticism, for the betterment of the Band communications
Effective at storytelling and providing accessible information to community members and the public, with consideration for all demographics we serve
Able to deal with people sensitivity, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
Working Conditions
Available to attend community events semi-regularly, in Lax Kw'alaams and Prince Rupert
Work in a collaborative, team environment
Work in an office environment during regular business hours, unless prior arrangements have been given in writing and approved by the Manager of Communications
Maintain regular internal communication with the Manager of Communications and other department staff via phone, text-based chat, email or in-person conversation throughout the work day
Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a healthy lifestyle.
The successful candidate may be asked to provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening as a condition of employment.
