The Opportunity



The Alberta SPCA is seeking a

Communications Officer

to develop and deliver clear, compassionate, and compelling communications that advance the Alberta SPCA's mission to protect animals and promote their welfare across Alberta.This role leads day-to-day media relations, creates meaningful and impactful content, and supports integrated communications and fundraising efforts in a mission-driven organization.

This position will be based out of our Edmonton head office, located at 17904 118 Ave NW. Though this role is based in office, a flexible work arrangement may be considered, as per the needs of the department. The hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours as business needs require. Occasional travel within Alberta is required.

What You'll Do



1.

Public Relations

Develop and execute proactive and reactive media relations strategies Draft and distribute media releases, media advisories, and statements Act as a day-to-day media contact, responding to inquiries and coordinating interviews Prepare briefing notes, key messages, and Q&As for spokespeople

2.

Content Creation & Storytelling

Write, edit, and proofread content across multiple platforms, including:
o Website pages and blog posts

o Email newsletters and e-blasts

o Social media posts and captions

o Fundraising appeals and donor communications

o Annual reports, impact pieces, and campaign materials

Translate complex or sensitive topics into clear, engaging, audience-appropriate messaging Organize and attend photoshoots

3.

Digital & Social Media

Working with the communications specialist, plan and execute social media content calendars across key platforms Support basic community management, including monitoring comments and messages Track performance metrics and adjust content strategies accordingly

4.

Fundraising & Campaign Support

Collaborate with advancement team to develop compelling donor-focused messaging Write fundraising appeals, landing page copy, and campaign emails Support integrated campaigns that span PR, digital, and donor communications

5.

Planning, Coordination & Project Management

Manage multiple communications projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment Maintain editorial calendar and contribute to communications planning Support crisis and issues communications as needed

6.

Brand & Quality Control

Apply brand standards consistently across all communications materials Edit and review content for clarity, accuracy, tone, and accessibility

What You Bring



3-5 years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related discipline preferred Demonstrated experience writing high-quality content across multiple channels, including web, email, social media, and long-form pieces Experience supporting or leading media relations, including pitching stories and responding to media inquiries Strong editing and proofreading skills with a high level of attention to detail Experience supporting fundraising, campaign, or donor communications is an asset Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams Sound judgment and professionalism when working with sensitive or high-profile issues Experience editing websites (e.g., WordPress or similar) Familiarity with email marketing platforms and basic segmentation (e.g., Constant Contact or similar) Basic graphic design experience an asset (e.g., Canva)

Compensation & benefits:

$78,000 - $85,000 per year. Group Benefit Plan, Health & Wellness Spending Account, Retirement Pension Plan and RRSP company matching. Three weeks of vacation to start, 15 sick days, and 5-family responsibility days.
