Compensation Range $5,063.67 - $7,294.50 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) Communications Manager\xe2\x80\x99s key responsibilities will be designing and implementing a strategic communications plan within IRES, and disseminating and communicating IRES findings and activities to government, academia, NGO\xe2\x80\x99s and the general public. This position will assist on the coordination of the Vancouver Summer Program (VSP) on behalf of IRES. The VSP is expected to target 50 - 80 international students. The position will start at 80%.

Organizational Status
The IRES Communications Manager will report to the Director and Communications Committee and will work closely with faculty, administrative and research staff, and graduate students. The Manager will also oversee one student worker and liaise with communications staff within the Faculty of Science, and the University.

Work Performed

  • Design and implement a strategic communications plan
  • Manage the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability website content development
  • Researching, writing and editing content for online materials
  • Manage data collection and implement processes for ongoing maintenance of faculty/staff/student pages
  • Manage the promotion of IRES research through social media
  • Manage media enquiries and press releases
  • Manage the facilitation and promotion of researcher interviews
  • Manage the design and production of the IRES newsletter
  • Oversee research reports, working papers, and publications databases
  • Manage and create content for information monitors in the AERL lobby
  • May plan and promote conferences, symposiums and special lectures
  • Alongside the VSP coordinator will assist with outreach events including the VSP. Recruits, trains and oversees students and staff for these events.
  • Oversees the design, content and planning of the VSP for IRES
  • Works with other VSP staff to coordinate a range of social and cultural activities for VSP students
  • Marketing, communications and public relations for the VSP and other outreach projects as requested by Director
  • Miscellaneous other duties
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Works without direct supervision using a strong degree of independent judgement. Error or poor judgement will result in lack of confidence in the Institute and a poor impression by the public, granting agencies, and other stakeholders.

Supervision Received
The IRES Communications Manager works independently under general direction of the Director and Administrator.

One - three student workers

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Journalism, English, Science or other relevant discipline. Masters preferred. Minimum four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with WordPress is required.
  • Superior writing, editing, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in science communication for a general audience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to adapt writing styles for various purposes, media requirements and audiences
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of conventional and electronic media, publishing, website development and communications product development
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Capacity to deal professionally and diplomatically with a wide variety of individuals and organizations
  • Ability to effectively use MS Office at an intermediate level
  • Able to complete work in a timely and effective manner
  • Highly organized with ability to prioritize assignments and work independently or in a team environment
