The sh\xc3\xadsh\xc3\xa1lh Nation is currently seeking a dynamic individual for the position of Communications Manager. In 1986 the sh\xc3\xadsh\xc3\xa1lh Nation became the first self-governing and independent first nation in Canada. We are located in Sechelt, the growing seaside community on BC\xe2\x80\x99s beautiful Southern Sunshine Coast, and offer the advantages of living in a picturesque smaller community with easy access to the lower mainland. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and working closely with staff, you\'ll manage the organizational communication plan activities of the sh\xc3\xadsh\xc3\xa1lh Nation, with emphasis on developing and implementing integrated communication initiatives and strategies. With an understanding of the short-term and long-term communications and public relations needs; you\'ll also prepare strategies to address emerging issues that could potentially impact the organization. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong research abilities and analytical skills to understand respective audiences and engage them with content. Most importantly, you\'ll operate with a high level of tact, confidentiality, diplomacy and integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and oversee the implementation of an overall strategy for media services and communications with the goal of creating a strong, coherent image of the sh\xc3\xadsh\xc3\xa1lh Nation.
  • Support Council with Membership Relations and Communication.
  • Collaborate with staff and relevant departments to assist in managing media relations and publicity
  • Manage online presence and general communication to membership.
  • Provide regular updates to the Chief Administrative Officer.
  • Act as an internal consultant on all communications activities and promote awareness of external communications activities with departments.
  • Effectively manage resources and budgets for the communications department.
  • Oversee the production of a periodical newsletter or newspaper.
  • Plan and oversee the consistent message and image of the organization\'s website.
  • Plan and oversee the preparation of the production of publicity brochures, handouts, direct mail leaflets, promotional videos, photographs, films and multimedia programs.
  • Produce or oversee the production and maintenance of internal and external media communications.
  • Advise directors and other members of the organization on media relations.
  • Attend press conferences, product launches and networking events.
  • Produce reports for internal analysis as needed.
  • Listen to media reports and read news articles relevant to the work of the company.
  • Plan news agendas.
  • Build community relations by attending events as needed.
  • Work in partnership with all departments with the production of press releases.
  • Develop strategies to effectively deliver press releases to media.
  • Devise and coordinate media photo opportunities.
  • Manage the public relations and media aspects of any potential or present crisis situation.
  • Adhere to workplace Health & Safety policies, as well as safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participate as a member of the Administration Team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in a discipline relevant to communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related discipline.
  • 3-5 years of direct work experience in communications or related experience.
  • Expertise in all matters relating to marketing, public relations and communications.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans and material.
  • Ability to develop relationships with partner organizations, media representations and other external organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. A portfolio of prior work would be an asset.
  • Proven ability to prepare and implement communication strategies in a variety of media.
  • A list of professional media and PR contacts is an asset.
  • Ability to analyze information, and recommend courses of action to be taken.
  • Experience working with BC First Nations communities and organizations is an asset.
  • Ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts to groups.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize workload.
  • Strong computer skills and excellent knowledge of MS Office programs and desktop publishing programs such as Publisher, Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Strong writing, proofreading, layout and design and professional printing/ publishing skills are essential.
  • Strong website management skills (content, updates, linkage etc.).
  • Social Media experience coupled with an understanding of Search Engine Optimization.
  • A commitment to working cooperatively in a team environment with staff, senior management, community members and the public.
  • Participation in regular meetings.
