The Ottawa Food Bank is seeking a creative, self-motivated, and passionate Coordinator, Communications who will elevate the organization's brand through digital storytelling, with a focus on video production, photography, graphic design, and social media management.

The Ottawa Food Bank is the main emergency food provider in the National Capital Region, supporting nearly 100 community food programs. With over 556,000 annual visits and 37% of clients being children, we distribute nearly 8.3 million pounds of food each year, thanks to our community's support.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Communications, this bilingual role supports communications strategies across departments including Advocacy, Development, Programs, and Volunteer Resources. While specializing in visual storytelling and social media, the role also contributes to writing, web design, and internal communications.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Video Production and Photography
Assist in the storytelling and delivery of the Ottawa Food Bank's message through innovative use of video, photography, and emerging technologies.
Ideate, plan, shoot, and edit high-quality video content to support storytelling across digital platforms, including social media, website, and internal communications, recognizing various audiences and stakeholders.
Capture compelling photography that reflects the Ottawa Food Bank's mission, programs, and community impact.
Maintain and organize a digital asset library for photo and video content.
Ensure all visual content adheres to brand guidelines and accessibility standards.
Graphic Design
Design engaging visual assets for digital and print use, including social media graphics, reports, banners, cards, signage, infographics, one-pagers, and promotional materials.
Collaborate with internal teams to develop creative concepts that support campaigns and initiatives.
Assists the Communications Manager with the creation of various reports as needed, including the annual Year in Review, Volunteer Impact Report, and internal volunteer report.
Maintain brand consistency across all visual communications.
Use tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva to produce high-quality designs.
Content and Social Media
Contribute to writing and editing content for social media, supporting individual and project-based requests and regular series such as Thankful Thursday, Farm Friday, events round-ups, and more.
Manage and monitor all social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube), including scheduling posts, engaging with audiences, and monitoring performance.
Respond to social media comments and direct messages as needed in English and French. Bring potential issues to the attention of Manager, Communications or other directly impacted departments.
Collaborate with teams to gather stories and updates that support digital campaigns.
Help ensure messaging is consistent, timely, and aligned with the Ottawa Food Bank's voice and values.
Monitor and analyze digital communication metrics, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
General Communications Suppor
Assist in writing for external and internal audiences, including but not limited to, donors, general supporters, food program visitors, member agencies, volunteers, and elected officials.
Assist in updating the official Ottawa Food Bank website in English and in French using WordPress and Elementor, with the assistance of third-party IT support services ensuring that content is accurate, engaging and up to date.
Assist in delivering internal announcements through writing, editing, and/or publishing internal communications via email, digital signage, Microsoft Teams, and other platforms.
Other duties as assigned, supporting Communications plans and strategies.
KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES
Strong visual communication skills and social media management skills.
Superior photography, videography, and video editing skills using
Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or Microsoft Office.
Superior graphic design skills using Canva.
Experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube) and social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite).
Experience with Microsoft Office applications (SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
Experience with Asana or similar project management tools is an asset.
A comfortable working knowledge of WordPress is an asset.
Strong written communication skills demonstrated through experience with diverse audiences.
Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, and flexibility to adapt to varying workload demands and varying schedules.
Demonstrated understanding of effective electronic and print media strategies.
Highly organized, independent, and self-directed, with the ability and skills to establish and manage priorities.
Committed to high performance standards and continuous improvement; open to adopting new, more efficient ways of planning and delivering communications strategies, etc.
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to seek out solutions to challenges.
Strong customer service skills and a demonstrated attention to detail and quality assurance.
Judgment, tact, and discretion, and strong interpersonal skills, are required when dealing with co-workers, volunteers, donors, member agencies, and the public.
EXPERIENCE
This position would generally suit a person with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a communications role. Experience in a non-profit or social service setting would be an asset.
EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Post-secondary degree or college diploma in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field, or a combination of other education, training, and experience.
Access to a valid driver's license and vehicle is an asset for this position.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTACTS
The work involves ongoing contact with co-workers and relationships with communications-related suppliers as well as clients, donors, and supporters of the Ottawa Food Bank.
PROBLEM SOLVING
The ability to effectively identify problems and resolve conflicts is required to work effectively as a team member.
SUPERVISION
This position has no direct reports.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERRORS
Errors in judgement or lack of discretion when dealing with the media, suppliers and other contacts could impact on the Ottawa Food Bank's image and directly affect its ability to efficiently and effectively deliver food to partner agencies.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND TRAVEL
Work is normally performed in an office environment with occasional remote work, as agreed to with your direct supervisor. Some duties are performed in the Warehouse and at offsite venues across the National Capital Region. Working after regular business hours to manage social media accounts is a regular requirement.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The work is varied and can be stressful at times. There may be frequent interruptions. Visual stress may occur when using a computer for extended periods of time. Limited physical activity is required to perform the duties of the position. Occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting are required at offsite events.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Excellent English and French language skills (verbal and written) are a requirement of the position.
SALARY RANGE
Salary is $55,000 - $65,000 annually, commensurate with skills and experience. The Ottawa Food Bank also offers a comprehensive benefits package.
