About Us

The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 15,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to more than 141 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children\xe2\x80\x99s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused. Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 8 M lbs. of food each year.

Position Overview

Looking for an opportunity to jump start your career in Communications? This close-knit team is expanding to take on a Part-Time Communications Assistant. This is a great opportunity for a new grad or student in their final year of a degree or diploma in Public Relations, Communication, Digital Communications or Marketing. This position assists the Communications Manager and Communications Coordinator with planning, coordinating, and implementing marketing and communications opportunities while maintaining key relationships within the organization and external stakeholders to support the GVFB\xe2\x80\x99s strategic direction and goals. An appetite to learn, ability to build relationships and a passion for writing and storytelling are critical qualities for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Communications team to achieve organizational communication goals in alignment with the brand, image, voice, and mission of the GVFB.
  • Conduct client, donor, and volunteer interviews to tell our story.
  • Assist with photographing, videoing, and editing content for external communications.
  • Assist with updating the website.
  • Assist with the development of newsletters across the organization.
  • Along with the Communications team, coach staff on how to implement branding components such as templates and the brand guidelines.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the media and visual archives.
  • Assist with social media content creation, as needed, such as writing content, scheduling posts and analyzing viewership.
  • Simple graphic design using Canva, Adobe Illustrator or other photo editing tools.
  • Provide support at events, such as golf tournaments, third-party events, and grocery store activations.
  • Other admin tasks as requested by the Communications Manager.

Personal Attributes and Core Skills

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders including employees, volunteers, clients, and the public.
  • Demonstrate strong writing skills with emphasis on attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while thriving to meet deadlines and adapting to change
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, work in a team environment, and build trust

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion (or in progress) of post-secondary education in Public Relations, Communications, Digital Communications, or related field.
  • 6 months of volunteer, co-op or paid relevant experience an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit clear, engaging, and grammatically correct content
  • Experience with Windows MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop
  • Proficiency using social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok
  • Scheduling tools such as Hootsuite and Buffer an asset
  • Fundraising and/or non-profit experience or exposure an asset.
