Recruitment range: $73,548- $81,092 starting salary determined by the PEA

Performance range: starting salary to max of $95,658 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

Mandate:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Communications and Media Relations Officer supports the implementation of communications and public relations projects that advance UVic\'s priorities, with an emphasis on internal audiences such as faculty, researchers and staff. Specific responsibilities will focus on integrated communications projects and storytelling, including media relations, corporate and copywriting, editing, and issues communications. This work can support the production of news releases, publications and other proactive and reactive media and public relations materials.

Objectives:

As an experienced public relations strategist, this position ensures a consistent brand voice and brings a mastery of written storytelling - both short forms and long - while also understanding when to recommend visual, auditory, or other content formats when they are more suitable to get the job done and have the needed impact.

As part of the team that manages issues and emergency communications, this position frequently works with confidential or sensitive information and related decisions/policy that could affect the university\'s relationship with key stakeholders. This position may require occasional work outside of regular business hours when emergencies or crises arise. Time-sensitive work may require completion outside of regular work hours. Senior leaders on campus may call during off hours on issues related to the safety of campus members or reputational risk for the university. Media may call during off hours or on weekends with information that needs verification on short notice, and tracking down the appropriate administrator outside of office hours may be required.

Job Requirements

This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor\'s degree in communications, public affairs, journalism, or English plus 5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
  • Media relations and journalism or the equivalent combination of high-volume, highly visible, deadline-driven work engaging in external environments and demonstrated ability to strategically engage stakeholders to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Project management experience and the ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing timelines.
  • Proven experience with keeping up with current-affairs news and trends and incorporating this knowledge into media-relations and public-affairs activities.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with local, national and global media landscapes.
  • Proven experience with effective written and verbal communication, along with the ability to translate complex ideas and research findings into plain language, integrating familiarity of Canadian Press style and/or other style guides.
  • Demonstrated use of a variety of storytelling approaches and tools, as well as the strategic use of digital media.
  • Understanding of project-management best practices.
