The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) is a nationally supported research institute and a non-profit corporation (CITA Inc.) Our mission is to foster interaction within the Canadian astrophysics community and to serve as an international centre of excellence for theoretical studies in astrophysics. We educate and develop the next generation of scientific leaders with national postdoctoral fellowships as well as postdoctoral and senior research associate fellowships, and through the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. We are devoted to studying the origin and evolution of the universe and the many phenomena revealed by modern astronomy.

The Communications and Events Coordinator will report into the Director of CITA. This position will be responsible for increasing the profile of CITA on the national and international stage by promoting and publicizing research, programs, faculty and students.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing tasks related to the production and dissemination of communications and educational materials
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for content generation activities
  • Writing and editing copy and content to advance communications objectives; including internal / external communications
  • Researching and recommending story ideas that advance priorities and initiatives, per the Director\'s communication strategy
  • Liaising with departmental staff to provide writing and editing support on policy documents and research grants
  • Developing content for educational and promotional materials
  • Conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities
  • Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in communications, English, public relations, or journalism, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four years of recent and related experience in developing wide-range promotional and communications materials, in a communications-focused role
  • Demonstrated experience writing about scientific research.
  • Experience writing articles, researching and pitching stories, and interviewing faculty, researchers, students and alumni to promote strategic initiatives.
  • Experience with creating and editing promotional content (brochures, newsletters, websites).
  • Demonstrated work experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn), including tracking and reporting on metrics.
  • Experience in planning, advertising and promoting in person and virtual events; experience coordinating logistics with suppliers and internal clients.
  • Experience conducting post-event evaluations.
  • Experience building and maintaining strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders; ability to liaise and build relationships with members of the scientific community.
  • Experience updating and maintaining information on digital platforms.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to write in a variety of styles for a variety of audiences; excellent copywriting, proofreading, and editing skills.
  • Highly developed organizational skills; ability to meet tight deadlines and ensure others are aware of project timelines and deliverables
  • Advanced skills in MS Office and video communication platforms (e.g. Zoom, MS Teams), CMS platforms.
  • Skilled use of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), Canva.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to foster effective relationships with all levels of faculty, staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders.
  • Must have creativity and initiative, willingness to bring forward new ideas.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Interest and expertise in writing about scientific research, in particular astrophysics and astronomy, will be considered an asset
  • Experience writing and editing grants will be considered an asset

USW Pay Band 11 -- $67,659 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $86,523. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
