Compensation Range $5,063.67 - $7,294.50 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Summary

The Irving K. Barber Communications Office is shared between the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science (FoS) and the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) with the primary home faculty being FoS (51%). The Communications and Events Coordinator (CEC) is an essential part of supporting the communications needs of these two Faculties. The CEC works to support an informed and engaged campus community, help the Faculty engage with its external stakeholders and enhance the reputation of the faculty.

The CEC is responsible for promotion of all events on and off campus, using digital, print and social media mediums. The CEC works closely with faculty, staff and students to understand their events, create promotional plans, and create the content and materials required. This often involves working with external stakeholders and partners. The CEC also attends events to provide photography and/or videography support and create content to share to the Faculty social media channels and websites.

News and story development is also a primary responsibility of the CEC, who works closely with faculty and staff to identify such opportunities. The CEC creates, edits and promotes the content, which could take the form of written articles, Q&As, social media posts, videos, etc.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Manager, Communications. Internally, this position interacts with all administrative departments within the Faculty, which includes students, staff and faculty. This position interacts with other UBC departments such as IT, UBC Studios, other faculties, Alumni and Development, Student Experience, and University Relations.

Work Performed

Supports informed and engaged campus and external communities by:

- Works closely with faculty and staff to identify events to be promoted
- Develops and executes promotional plans, which could include: posting to UBC and community events
calendars, creates and shares social media posts, creates graphics and posters, creates digital
signage, sets up and manages Eventbrite registrations, promotes events in campus newsletters and
on Faculty webpages
- For larger events, works with external partners on promotional strategies and materials, creates news
articles or advisories, and works with UBC Studios to produce video assets
- Develops and executes paid online advertising, as required
- Communicates with client/organizer about event promotion plans and status, as well as registration
numbers, if applicable
- Attends events to take photos and/or videos and gather content to feed Faculty news and social
channels
- Evaluates the efficacy of promotions and recommends improvements

Enhances the reputation of the faculty by:

- Maintains strong relationships with faculty and staff in order to stay up to date on events and news
opportunities (e.g. recruitment, research, teaching, innovation, awards, alumni, etc.)
- Creates written materials (including interviewing subjects, researching, writing and editing) to be used
on the Faculty websites, news channels, and social media channels to support strategic goals related
to recruitment, campus community engagement, research, external community engagement, alumni
engagement, etc.
- Works collaboratively with University Relations, UBC Studios, and other faculty communicators to
integrate Faculty stories and content into their communications initiatives and marketing strategies

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The consequence of error in this area could be very serious for the University as it concerns the public image and profile of the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science and/or the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on a local, provincial, national and international level. Errors could seriously impair the public image of the Faculty and may impact the reputation of the University. Lack of effort and/or poor judgment would result in lack of appropriate and timely information available on the Faculty website for faculty and students.

Supervision Received

Working under the direction of the Manager, Communications, this position will work closely with the Manager and the Web and Digital Media Coordinator, but have the opportunity exercise considerable judgment and innovation in developing, implementing and supporting communication initiatives. Work is reviewed for achievement of objectives, soundness of judgment and quality of work.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.Minimum of four years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum of two years of professional experience in communications roles Strong copy writing, editing and proof-reading skillsExperience with Web 2.0 technologies online and social media content development (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube)Experience with a wide variety of applications, including but not limited to design and publishing software (e.g., Adobe, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Final Cut Pro)Experience with photographyDemonstrated ability to collaborate and engage with all levels of faculty and staff with tact and discretion.Demonstrated ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a high level of attention to detail.Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others and on their own.The nature of the role requires occasional work on evenings and/or weekends to attend events.
