If so, join the City\xe2\x80\x99s Renewable Energy System\xe2\x80\x99s Section in this exciting new role!Reporting to the Team Lead of Communications and Marketing and directly supporting the District Energy Strategy team, this is a unique opportunity to contribute your communications skills to a transformational city-wide project. As a Communications Advisor, you will drive communications strategy, support public engagement and provide expert advice to contribute to the success of district energy in Edmonton. You will work collaboratively with the District Energy Strategy team to identify stakeholders, define communication needs, craft communications strategies and implement plans and associated tactics.The responsibilities of this position range from the development of comprehensive integrated communications plans to project management to relationship building. You are required to work closely with colleagues in an integrated fashion on projects across portfolios. You will provide strategic communications advice and support critical to maintaining Council and public trust in the City\xe2\x80\x99s ability to deliver this important infrastructure and climate resilience work. With a focus on the to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Lead, develop, manage and implement integrated communication, engagement and external relations plans and projects for both external and internal audiences to advance the project\'s strategic goals
  • Plan communication activities/events to effectively share information, engage stakeholders and to support public engagement opportunities
  • Be skilled at writing and editing a variety of communication materials, including news releases, 311 content, web content, brochures, newsletters, social media and other communication materials, to advance business goals
  • Able to effectively research topics and translate technical detail into meaningful plain language writing or other materials that resonate with various audiences
  • Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice using effective communication strategies and tactics
  • Manage media relations including planning and managing media events, developing strategies and messaging and coaching spokespeople
  • Procure and manage communications consultant services and work with designers and suppliers to help create effective communication products that meet objectives and specifications, on time and within budget
  • Maintain a broad perspective on corporate, departmental and branch issues and priorities, as well as those of Council, stakeholder groups, professional associations and other orders of government in order to inform communications strategies
  • Achieve results with a commitment to a respectful and inclusive style
  • Perform related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Degree in a communications, public relations, or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • OR Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully creating, developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans
  • Extensive knowledge of communications planning and delivery principles, techniques and practices
  • Demonstrated exceptional verbal communication, writing and editing skills
  • Experience or knowledge of related fields, such as advertising, creative services, audio and visual production, social media and content creation
  • Demonstrated experience with traditional media relations and coaching spokespeople
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels of an organization, including senior leadership. Superior issues identification and management skills along with proven client consulting skills
  • Demonstrated experience related to project and consultant management and event planning
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing tasks and deadlines
  • Ability to occasionally work after-hours work to provide media or public event support, as needed. Experience with the principles of stakeholder relations and public engagement for full project development from strategy to construction through to system operation would be an asset
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective public engagement tactics and strategy, including survey-based campaigns would be an asset
  • Existing knowledge of district energy systems, energy transition or previous experience in a climate-related field is an asset
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset
