As a Communications Advisor you will lead communications strategies and tactics related to City priorities, build relationships with teams across the organization, and provide strategic communications advice to leaders across the department.

The responsibilities of this fast-paced position include responding quickly to a changing environment, developing comprehensive integrated communications plans and supporting tactics, project management, and relationship-building. Duties include:

  • Lead, develop, manage and implement integrated marketing and communications strategies and tactics for both external and internal audiences
  • Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice, effective strategies and responsive products
  • Manage media relations and potential issues, including organizing media events, developing strategies and consistent messaging, liaising with other orders of government or community, coaching spokespeople and sometimes serving as a spokesperson
  • Work with clients, designers, printers, vendors and marketing agencies to create effective communications and advertising products
  • Lead and support marketing and education initiatives, as well as client responses to resident inquiries
  • Write news releases, public service announcements, media advisories, brochures, newsletters and other communication products
  • Edit, develop and update web and 311 content for programs, projects and initiatives
  • Use social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) to advance business goals and enhance internal and external communications effort
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Degree in a communications, public relations, or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position OR Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Advertise, print, graphic design, traditional media, social media and other web-based communications experience
  • Proven experience with ability to successfully create, develop, implement and evaluate strategic communication plans
  • Demonstrated experience with traditional media relations, coaching spokespeople and acting as a spokesperson
  • Diverse community connections, including broad understanding of changing community diversity, anti-racism work and inclusionary needs, are an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Google Applications and Gmail is an asset
  • Proficiency in photo/video editing/posting software is an asset
  • Experience related to project management and communicating with stakeholder groups
  • Relationship-building skills with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
  • Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated competencies in assessing the impact of communication plans based on key performance indicators to reflect on what went well and apply continuous improvement strategies

Up to 2 permanent full-time positions available

Hours of Work: 40.00 hours per week, Monday-Friday
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance. Note: This position is available to access our Earned Days Off program.
Salary: $41.004 - $51.668 (Hourly); $85,616.350 - $107,882.780 (Annually)
