Position Overview

The Alberta Children\'s Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Communications Advisor. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reports to the Manager, Community Engagement in the Alberta Children\'s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), and collaborates with the Communications Specialist and Knowledge Translation Specialist. The Communications Advisor is an integral part of the ACHRI team providing comprehensive, clear and concise communications planning, advice and support to deliver on the Child Health and Wellness (CHW) Strategy and One Child Every Child (OCEC) Program communications plans and activities.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

COMMUNICATIONS

Research, write, edit, and publish communications plans and products for a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders

Create strategic communications plans for a complex national research initiative with diverse stakeholders, particularly focussed on national and international partners

Conceptualize and design high-quality strategic communications products such as e-publications, slideshows, banners, impact reports, cards, booklets, graphics, posters, event invitations, tri-folds and SWAG

Generate story ideas and write articles for UToday

Oversee and edit ACHRI newsletters to engage diverse members including community partners

Manage and maintain the CHW photo bank

WEBSITE / DIGITAL

Undertake strategic audit and update of CHW and OCEC websites (Drupal 8)

Provide strategic advice and support to OCEC Program and research teams as well as Owerko colleagues

Support CHW and OCEC presence on UCalgary platforms (eg. Livewhale)

Create custom web registration forms and surveys for workshops, town halls and events

Monitor and maintain content for electronic bulletin boards

SOCIAL MEDIA

Develop social media strategy to support CHW and OCEC strategic goals in alignment with community partnership strategy.- Oversee engaging content for social media, including Facebook and Twitter

Develop strategy for new, national social media streams on Linked In and Instagram to engage national/international stakeholders

Provide consultation, advice, and support to meet the research goals of OCEC research teams and accelerators

EVENTS

Contribute to communications planning for CHW and OCEC events:

To showcase research and mobilize knowledge with scientists, donors, community partners and a wide range of stakeholders

To support education programming and trainee development, particularly dedicated to Indigenous and EDI learning

General support for ACHRI-led Child Health and Wellness events and webinars

EVALUATION / SUPPORT

Provide support for CHW key leaders, and OCEC Program teams and accelerators in digital marketing and communications

Assist CHW and OCEC researchers on university branding and visual identity standards

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A post-secondary diploma/degree in a relevant area such as communications, public relations, marketing or journalism
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience
  • Experience in strategic communications for new ventures, national startups and multi-million dollar initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to operate within a complex, multifaceted work environment and support a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent language skills, written and oral communication
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, develop strategic communications plans, and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities
  • High level of proficiency in understanding complex projects in order to write, edit and design communications aimed at a wide variety of audiences/stakeholders
  • Execute strategic planning, scheduling and production of print and digital communications
  • Plan and execute social media strategies to support the CHW Strategy and One Child Every Child Program
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications such as Word and PowerPoint
  • Proficient with Adobe Suite Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop
  • Proficient with web publishing tools such as Drupal and website content management
  • Photography, videography and graphic design skills are essential in this role
