The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory based at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto, focusing on research, development, and high-level strategic policy and legal engagement at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security. The Lab uses a \xe2\x80\x9cmixed methods\xe2\x80\x9d approach to research combining practices from political science,law, computer science, and area studies. Our research includes investigating digital espionage against civil society, documenting Internet filtering and other technologies and practices that impact freedom of expression online, analyzing privacy, security, and information controls of popular applications, and examining transparency and accountability mechanisms relevant to the relationship between corporations and state agencies regarding personal data and other surveillance activities.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Director of Administration, Citizen Lab and working under the general direction of the Director, Citizen Lab, the Communication Strategist develops the strategic plan for increasing the Citizen Lab\'s profile and presence in the national and international community and supporting a wide range of the Lab\'s goals and priorities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and developing an integrated multi-channel communications strategy independently
  • Developing and implementing digital communication campaigns and programs that support strategic objectives
  • Advising on best practices and strategies to maximize digital communication initiatives
  • Fostering and maintaining positive relationships with senior management to gain approval for strategies and plans
  • Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels
  • Overseeing and implementing website enhancement activities to support project/program goals and objectives
  • Developing and implementing social media operational procedures and best practices that support strategic objectives
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, journalism or other related field, or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years recent and relevant experience in developing and executing comprehensive communication and marketing plans for research advancement, public relations, fundraising and external liaison
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and executing a variety of creative, persuasive and cost effective marketing and communications projects, preferably in a post-secondary research lab setting
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing crisis communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in writing and editing work in both academic and business settings
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborations and partnership with industry and institutions domestically and internationally
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating complex issues in digital media, global security, and human rights policies to various stakeholders nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing events through the full cycle, including event planning, implementation and closing ; Experience with event logistics with the ability to perform events setup and close off
  • Experience with identifying and recommending creative outreachprogram initiatives that expand outreach audience profiles
  • Experience in developing and preparing speaking materials, press kits, presentation key messaging and talking points in the context of written material and web content
  • Demonstrated experience in managing various Web publishing and communications tools (blogs, social media, email newsletters, content management systems, CSS, HTML etc.).
  • Experience leading a communication team in a formal reporting relationship
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, HTML, Word Press, spreadsheets, databases and web(blogs, social media, email newsletters, content management systems, CSS, HTML etc.) and desktoppublishing/graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of web marketing, including website analytics and optimization methods and technologies
  • Demonstratedunderstanding of best practices in information architecture, navigation, user interface,usability, accessibility standards and testing
  • Excellent problem solving, diplomacy, and analytical skills
  • Excellent creative skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability implement and manage multiple projects
  • Excellent analytical and presentation skills
