ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Communications & Marketing Manager, you will play an important role in communications planning and developing content to facilitate the exchange of information between SOCAN and our members, clients, the music industry, and the public. Responsibilities include crafting compelling messages and fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure messages meet business objectives. Your expertise in strategic content development and creative storytelling at a member-based or not-for-profit company will drive SOCAN\xe2\x80\x99s strategic pillars and enhance brand reputation. Additionally, you will support strategic planning for advertising, sponsorships, branding, and media relations activities.

WHAT YOU\xe2\x80\x99LL DO / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications, marketing and content strategies that align with SOCAN\xe2\x80\x99s overall organizational goals and objectives, ensuring music creators and publishers continue to be valued for their extraordinary talent and work.
  • Oversee the creation of content for various channels, including social media, websites, blogs, and newsletters. This includes writing, editing, and ensuring content aligns with the organization\'s brand and messaging.
  • Protect and enhance the organization\'s brand reputation. Ensure consistent messaging, visual identity, and tone across all communication materials and platforms.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain annual budget for communications and marketing programming.
Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of content creators, including feature writer, social media generalist and videographer.
  • Support the professional growth of direct reports through constructive regular performance assessment, feedback, fostering trust, and establishing accountability and ownership.
  • Work with the Director, Communications and Marketing to develop clear goals that are aligned to the business strategy and culture and serve to inspire, motivate, and promote a culture of learning within the Communications and Marketing team.
  • Develop and maintain a high awareness of SOCAN\xe2\x80\x99s services, issues, structure and responsibilities.
  • Keep abreast with best practices, policies/procedures and trends in the music industry and any other issues impacting SOCAN.
Content Creation & Promotion
  • Create high-quality written content to increase awareness of SOCAN and membership offerings, for various channels and formats, including websites, newsletters, infographics, FAQs, presentations, and social media.
  • Develop and execute proactive communications approaches that anticipate and address key issues and opportunities, such as message map development and audience assessments.
  • Craft clear, concise messages that respond to the music industry needs with special consideration for the different requirements and perspectives of different audience segments.
  • Write research-based, data-driven and thought-leadership content to help us continue to grow SOCAN\xe2\x80\x99s reputation as a leading Canadian collective management organization representing music creators and publishers.
  • Develop content for websites including SOCAN.com, Board Elections, Socan Songwriting Prize, as well as ad-hoc microsites to promote and support music creators and publishers.
  • Leverage storytelling techniques to develop editorial and advertorial content and media pitches for mainstream and industry publications.
  • Identify opportunities for earned and paid content in industry publications and coordinate placements in various industry publications.
  • Assist with the creation of key messages, news releases, event speeches, and video scripts to support external education and outreach efforts targeted at music creators and publishers.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of communication campaigns using key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics and make recommendations for improvement and optimization of future communication efforts.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, market developments, and competitor activities to maintain a competitive communication edge.

  • Act as backup for the development of SOCAN magazine editorial content and internal communications requests.
Project Management
  • Initiate and manage assigned projects ensuring project objectives are met and delivery of the products / services is on time and budget.
  • Manage communications deliverables for various SOCAN events, including the annual SOCAN Awards and work with suppliers to execute deliverables. Manage corporate advertising and sponsorship initiatives, including identifying opportunities for sponsored content and partnerships.
  • Work closely with Digital & Social Media team to develop online campaigns to complement various communication and marketing initiatives.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING / QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Post-secondary school degree or certification in communications, copywriting, public relations, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of intermediate experience working in communications.
  • Experience working in the Canadian music scene.
  • Proven experience in B2B communication, marketing, or public relations.
  • Excellent business and creative writing skills.
  • Experience working in non-profit and/or member-based organization.
  • Proficiency in identifying and utilising different communication channels.
  • Versatile understanding of content strategy and techniques.
  • Budgeting experience and expertise.
  • Project management skills.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Keen interest in Canadian music scene and appreciation of all genres of music.
  • French language a strong asset.
