The Collaborative Robot Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining collaborative robot (cobot) welding system-primarily Universal Robots equipped with welding end-effectors. This role ensures consistent weld quality, safe operation, and efficient production output while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operate, load, and unload Universal Robot welding cells following standard work procedures. Set up welding jobs, including fixture placement, part alignment, torch checks, and wire feed verification. Select and start approved robot welding programs for daily production runs. Inspect welds for quality, consistency, penetration, and appearance using gauges and visual standards. Make minor program adjustments such as approach paths, torch angles, weld speeds, and dwell times (within authorized limits). Assist with UR cobot programming including waypoints, toolpaths, and I/O interactions. Adjust welding parameters (voltage, amperage, travel speed) under supervision or per established weld procedures. Perform robot tool center point (TCP) calibration and torch alignment checks. Perform basic preventive maintenance on robot, weld torch, wire feeder, and safety devices. Troubleshoot common issues such as wire jams, sensor faults, collision stops, and program interruptions. Communicate mechanical or electrical issues to maintenance or engineering teams. Follow all welding procedures, work instructions, and quality standards. Maintain a safe work area, ensuring compliance with machine guarding, PPE, and lockout/tagout requirements. Document production data, quality checks, and downtime accurately. Suggest improvements to fixtures, programming, tooling, or workflow to increase throughput and reduce defects. Work collaboratively with engineering, quality, and production teams to refine welding processes.

Skills, Education & Experience

Experience in welding processes (MIG). Ability to read blueprints and weld symbols Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with robotic equipment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety. Experience operating or programming Universal Robots (UR10, UR20) or similar cobots. Experience with robotic welding cells (e.g., Lincoln, Miller, or equivalent systems). Technical training in robotics/welding automation. Familiarity with Smooth Robotics.
