Founded in 1964 in Liverpool, NS, Mersey Seafoods is one of Nova Scotia's largest privately owned seafood companies, exporting to international markets around the world. Mersey owns a fleet of four large fishing vessels harvesting northern shrimp, offshore scallops and groundfish with a modern scallop processing facility in Liverpool, NS and a cold storage facility in Country Harbour, NS.



In 2019, Mersey acquired an interest in Scotia Harvest Inc., a vertically integrated seafood company based in Digby, NS with a fleet of vessels fishing scallops and groundfish and a state of the art 46,000 sq ft processing facility completed in 2021. Also, that year, Mersey acquired majority ownership in Fisherman's Market International Inc., a long-standing Halifax based retailer, wholesaler, and exporter of fresh, frozen, smoked, and salted seafood as well as live and frozen Atlantic lobster.



Mersey Seafoods also owns a ship repair business with significant capabilities: Mersey Marine Limited located in Liverpool, NS, providing a comprehensive range of services in the marine repair sector.

Position Summary:





The

Cold Storage Engine Room Operator

is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the refrigeration systems and associated equipment at our cold storage facility. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards and supports optimal facility performance.




Key Responsibilities:




Operate, monitor, and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems and related equipment. Perform routine inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on compressors, condensers, pumps, and control systems. Promptly respond in-person, (with option to respond remotely outside of business hours) to alarms, system irregularities, and emergency situations. Maintain accurate logs and records of plant operations, maintenance activities, and safety checks. Ensure compliance with provincial and federal regulations, including safety and environmental standards. Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to optimize system performance and energy efficiency.



Qualifications:





Candidates must hold

one

of the following valid licenses:


Second or First-Class Refrigeration Plant Operator License Interprovincial Fourth-Class or Higher Power Engineer License




Additional requirements:


Strong understanding of ammonia refrigeration systems and industrial safety practices. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure. Perform general mechanical maintenance and repairs on facility equipment and systems beyond refrigeration, ensuring overall operational reliability. Good communication skills and attention to detail. Physical ability to perform tasks in a cold storage environment.



Work Conditions:




Monday - Friday, with the option of evening, weekend, and holidays as required. Exposure to cold temperatures and industrial environments. * Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
