Co-Editor-in-Chief, USask Undergraduate Research Journal (Graduate Student Fellowship)

In the appointment of Student Assistant, your general duties and responsibilities will be:

The graduate student Co-Editor-in-Chief for the University of Saskatchewan Undergraduate Research Journal (a peer reviewed, open access scholarly journal) provides leadership, decision-making, and training to the USURJ editorial board of approximately 30 students, mostly undergraduate. They work closely with the journal\'s undergraduate student Co-Editor-in-Chief counterpart, Staff Advisor, and Faculty Advisor to train, mentor, and handle the day-to-day operations of the journal.

Your general location of work will be in-person at the University Library, and you will report to Liv Marken.

Required Number of Hours: 12 hours per week
Duration of Employment: September 1, 2023- April 30, 2024

Qualifications (Skills and Abilities)

You must be registered in a graduate program and have had experience with publishing (journal editorial work and/or publication in an academic journal). You must not hold over $15,000 in existing funding.

  • Experience in a leadership position.
  • Experience in scholarly publishing is an asset, whether authoring and publishing scholarly papers, working for a journal, or working as a reviewer.
  • Experience with prioritizing tasks, delegating, and managing projects collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people effectively, and to possess an understanding of principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, time management, and organizational skills.
  • An ability to listen actively, ask pertinent questions, demonstrate patience, and explain concepts clearly when guiding authors or editors through the process of preparing a scholarly journal.
  • Teaching and/or facilitation experience.
  • Some instructional experience focused on writing in any academic discipline is an asset but not required.
  • Experience with using Open Journal Systems is an asset.
  • Experience, knowledge, and/or understanding of Indigenous cultural contexts and histories is an asset.
Duties

In the appointment of graduate student Co-Editor-in-Chief of USURJ, your general duties and responsibilities will be as follows:
  • Managing undergraduate student journal submissions from across the disciplines
  • Communicating with reviewers and authors
  • Planning and co-facilitating editorial board fall training, including team building activities
  • Maintaining Open Journal Systems database of reviewers and submissions (training provided).
  • Facilitating or co-facilitating twice-weekly meetings
  • Recruiting, placing, scheduling, and training editorial board members.
