About Us

The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables manages the responsible development of the Province\xe2\x80\x99s mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping, water resource, and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.

About Our Opportunity

As a Coastal Geologist you will initiate, plan, conduct, and report on projects designed to monitor the Province\xe2\x80\x99s coastlines such as assessment of shorelines and infrastructure at risk to dynamic coastal processes, coastal flooding and erosion, and changes in sea level.

This position reports to the Manager of Project Operations with the Geological Survey Division.

Primary Accountabilities

Specific duties of the position include:

  • Planning and carrying out advanced research on the vulnerability of Nova Scotia\xe2\x80\x99s coastline from coastal flooding and erosion. This research should consider continual processes as well as in response to major coastal storms and human intervention.
  • Developing an understanding of the modern physical coastal environment, beach and nearshore dynamics in Nova Scotia.
  • Developing an understanding of Quaternary coastal conditions based on sedimentary, morphological, and palaeoecological indicators.
  • Consulting and liaising with varied stakeholders regarding projects being undertaken within the division\xe2\x80\x99s Environmental Geology Program and projects by other organizations.
  • Preparing and delivering oral and written reports, maps, and databases that communicate project results to the public, industry, and the scientific research community.
  • Supervising and assisting junior staff as required.
Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a university degree in Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline and several years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a Coastal Geologist role (B.Sc. plus 5 years related experience, M.Sc. plus 4 years related experience or Ph.D. plus 2 years experience). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

The right candidate has a strong record of designing and executing successful coastal geoscience field programs with several years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in planning and conducting this research independently. You have demonstrated experience producing and publishing high-quality scientific and technical reports or products of coastal geoscience research.

Knowledge and experience with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) surveying techniques, satellite imagery, drone technologies, coastal geomorphology, coastal flooding, GIS (preferably ArcGIS suite), lidar and aerial-photographic interpretation is required. Quaternary and/or surficial geology knowledge would be valuable. Experience collecting, maintaining, and interpreting geoscience data and developing value added products is essential. Experience working with municipal planners, government, NGO\xe2\x80\x99s, and academia will be considered an asset.

You possess exceptional writing and public presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently. Your strong analytical, project management, organizational, and interpersonal skills will be beneficial in this role.

You must possess a valid Class 5 drivers\xe2\x80\x99 license. You should be registered or eligible to register with Geoscientists Nova Scotia.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

This is an office and field-based position with extended periods of field work during the summer operational window (e.g., May-September), with occasional opportunities for travel to meetings, or conferences. In-province travel (department vehicle or helicopter) to project areas or sites will be required.

The position requires an individual with a high degree of geoscience expertise, credibility with senior management, staff, and stakeholders.

This position will be located in Halifax or Stellarton.

Pay Grade: PR 15

Salary Range: $2,746.69 - $3,348.16 Bi-Weekly
