As our Coal Petrographer /Coal Analyst, you are our front-line, scouting any issues in our client's coals. You will run several pieces of equipment testing coals, using ASTM and ISO standards, for coal quality. It requires that you be organized, self-motivated, and handle sensitive data and samples throughout the laboratory processes.

Coal companies need to know the quality of their coals in a timely manner, and when steel companies are using coke for their blast furnaces they often need a hand with the quality control of the incoming coal vessels supplying their coal blends, which feed the coke ovens.
Skills
Our employees come from different backgrounds, typically we find that people are successful in this role when they have:
3-5 years experience in a commercial laboratory setting.
Degree in Geological Sciences, Geoengineering, Chemistry, Metallurgical or Engineering.
Strong analytical and mechanical skills
Demonstrated familiarity with metallurgical and mineralogical techniques related to sample receipt and sample mounting and polishing
Highly motivated with the ability to prioritize what's on your plate
High degree of housekeeping, cleanliness is expected
Ability to work independently
Effectively handle high volume of work and time critical issues
Ability to follow procedures with accuracy and diligence
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff both written and orally
Ability to work in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (- valid Work Visa, or Landed Immigrant status)
What you will be doing
Document coal and coke sample receipt
Preparation of coal and coke samples for analysis
Automated and Manual microscopic analysis of coal and coke
Client liaison, problem solving and assisting with the interpretation of results
Training will be provided
