The course is based on a successful program that was developed in Norway and Sweden by and for Indigenous Sami people and adapted for First Nations communities. The model uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support silent speakers (people who know a language but do not use it) to overcome barriers to using their Indigenous language in their communities.
ROLE
The Co-Instructor will co-lead and provide support for a 10-week Latent Speaker course as part of GTC's language revitalization program entitled Reclaiming My Language: A Course for Silent Speakers. The course will be co-instructed by a Mental Health Specialist based in Teet?'it Zheh. This is a limited-term part-time position. The co-instructor will work closely with Language mentors, silent speakers, GTC language staff and the Mental Health Specialist co-instructor. The Co-Instructor assists with lesson implementation, learner engagement, and classroom support. This role contributes to the preservation, revitalization, and intergenerational transmission of Dinjii Zhuh ginjik and cultural knowledge.
Hours required: 8 hours/week x 12 weeks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruit participants for program.
Recruit fluent speakers as mentors in the program.
Co-lead 10-week course.
Schedule and co-ordinate weekly appointments between participants and mentors.
Schedule and co-ordinate internship placements.
Maintain regular contact with program participants and mentors and GTC language staff.
Connect participants with mental health resources as required.
Work with relevant staff to issue honorarium payments.
Assist with program evaluation and reporting as required.
Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment aligned with Gwich'in values.
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic to intermediate knowledge of the Gwich'in language, or strong language learning experience with a commitment to continued learning
Respectful understanding of Gwich'in culture, traditions, and ways of knowing
Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or supporting learners is an asset
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with Elders, instructors, and community members
Reliable, organized, and supportive in a classroom or community setting.
Clear Criminal Record Check.
Experience working with Indigenous language programs
Experience supporting adult learners, youth, or land-based education
Willingness to learn from Elders and fluent speakers
