Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Research Unit in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Cloud System Administrator. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Manager, Technology & Innovative Solutions.

This is a recurring part time position with variable hours. Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the overall successful operation of the IT systems including the quality of standards of all the internal and external software, clinical research data management solutions, and system services that are configured, built, hosted, tested, deployed and monitored within the various production and staging environments
  • System Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance tasks, including software updates, patch management, and system backups, to ensure the availability and reliability of research systems
  • Take part in the process of improvement of CRU system architecture and conception of new and innovative solutions for our production environments, especially with cloud in mind
  • Monitor the performance of system environments, diagnose, and solve detected performance problems, and design for robust and continuous up-time and performance
  • Ensure high availability and fail-over design of systems infrastructure
  • Help implementing control processes to prevent interruptions of services
  • Define and monitor backup operations and their encryption and availability
  • Document up-to-date infrastructure designs, diagrams, and systems configuration as well as protocols and standard operating procedures for troubleshooting, support and maintenance
  • Develop and maintain supporting utilities and applications to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of systems operation
  • Conduct performance monitoring and tuning, space management, quality assurance and disaster recovery planning to ensure the systems are secure and reliable
  • Provide high-level professional support to clients and colleagues
  • Responsible for managing the system architecture strategy and operations
  • Plans and provides tactical direction, set management goals, defines priorities, and develops long-term strategies to manage and scale the organization\'s system administration
  • Develop, implement and manage a 24x365 IT environment, ensuring site scalability, integrity, performance, economy and reliability
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Master\'s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications are a plus
  • 5 years of experience in managing IT information systems and performing system administration responsibilities, preferably with experience in a research or academic environment
  • AWS cloud certified like solutions architect, sysops administrator, cloud practitioner - or related
  • Strong knowledge of administering cloud-based environment solutions configuration (like VPCs, ELB, EC2, S3, RDS, etc.)
  • A solid understanding of networking, routing concepts, traffic shaping, port forwarding, DNS configuration, security certification, reverse proxies, protocols, tunneling, security groups, firewall configuration, configuring, monitoring, and securing a network in general
  • Extensive experience administering Linux and Windows on virtual machines (Red Hat, Ubuntu, Windows Server)
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as SendGrid, Twilio, Exchange, Email and SMTP, DNS, Nginx, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, IIS, MSSQL, open-source tools and applications, GitHub applications, plugins
  • A solid understanding of deployment pipelines, continuous integration, and pre- and post deployment validation and testing
  • Experience in building and managing monitoring services
  • Strong knowledge of administering container services for production use (Docker, Kubernetes) and experience with deploying and using GitHub and Docker Hub services
  • Strong knowledge of deploying and maintaining high availability and fail-over solutions, this includes being able to design load balancing architectures
  • Trained in database administration and setup. Experienced with databases and structures, especially in health-related field
  • Familiarity with modern statistical and coding languages like R, Python, Django, JavaScript
  • Experience or understanding of implementing and administering business continuity and disaster recovery strategies (multi-sites, failover & redundancy, backup processes, master slave solutions, warm or hot standby)
  • Knowledge of authentication and identity management: LDAP, A/D, OAuth
  • Experience with Network Area Storage and scheduled backup pipelines. Experience with backup-and-restore procedures and protocols
  • Excellent overall knowledge of technology and technology trends
  • Knowledge of or experience with Agile Software development processes
  • Experience in ethics rules, data security and compliance, and regulations and submissions
  • Experience in clinical research practice guidelines (i.e. Health Canada, ICH, GCP, FDA)
  • Understanding of technical controls related to 21 CFR Part 11 compliancy, and SOC type 2 standardization
