The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for a clinical veterinarian to work within the Ambulatory Equine Service (AES) at the AVC-VTH.The AES is a field-based service providing top-tier primary equine services to clientele primarily on Prince Edward Island, with equine patients from PEI and the Maritimes also seen at the VTH on a truck-in basis. As well as providing clinical service, the AES also provides clinical teaching to final year DVM students during rotations as part of the clinical year teaching program.We are seeking a clinical veterinarian to join the team of Ambulatory Equine Service clinicians to fill a part-time (0.8 FTE) term position from July 29, 2024, until July 28, 2025, with the possibility of extension subject to funding and AVC/UPEI approvals.Responsibilities:The primary purpose of the AES Clinical Veterinarian position is to provide equine ambulatory service to clients and patients of the AVC-VTH. This position also participates in the clinical instruction, supervision and teaching of DVM students on clinical rotations.

  • Provision of clinical service in equine practice, including on-call and after-hours, to clients of the Ambulatory Equine Service at the VTH.
  • Participation in clinical instruction, supervision and teaching of final year DVM students as part of their clinical year teaching program rotation.
  • Willingness to act as a lead while on shift in providing guidance and coordination to technical/support staff, interns and residents.
  • To operate independently, working and communicating effectively with equine clientele to ensure good relationships are maintained and developed.
  • To work with large animal referral services within the VTH to ensure smooth referral of cases for specialty care, where relevant.
  • To triage, assess, and treat urgent and emergency cases to a high standard of primary care level medicine, including diagnostics and basic emergency procedures.
  • To ensure that all medical records are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that clients are updated with estimates and billing updates, and that billing is completed accurately for payment.
  • Ensure clear and professional communication for case management with clients and colleagues.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work within an academic environment.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties, which may include during university closures, to provide urgent and emergency veterinary care.
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary college resulting in DVM certification (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) resulting in a Certificate of Qualification from the CVMA (or equivalent)
  • Eligibility for licensure and to practice veterinary medicine in Prince Edward Island
  • A minimum of three years of post-graduate clinical experience in equine practice is required.
  • Experience working with Standardbred racehorses is required.
  • Post-graduate training and board certification or eligibility (ABVP, ACT, ACTV, ACVSMR) is desirable, but is not a requirement of the position.
  • Strong foundation in the practice of equine clinical veterinary medicine with an emphasis on equine sports medicine, and strong clinical skills to serve as a positive role model for students.
  • Demonstrated initiative, collegiality and professionalism with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize and assimilate clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care, in collaboration with horse-owners.
  • Must be willing and able to travel for patient care needs in the assigned region.
Preference given to individuals who have worked with DVM students in an academic environment.Hours:Averaging approximately 32 hours per week (0.8 FTE), hours will be assigned in conjunction with AES colleagues, typically 4 shifts per week between Monday and Friday.Shared on-call on a rotating basis for emergency service.Additional hours worked are compensated as per the FA2 collective agreement.Salary:Prorated to FTE and term. Appointment will be made at the Clinical Veterinary Professional (UPEIFA, BU2) level, FA2 Step 1, and is subject to final budgetary approval.
