About the Position



Norfolk General Hospital is seeking a full-time Clinical Supervisor. The Clinical Supervisor plays a critical


leadership role at Norfolk General Hospital, ensuring the delivery of safe, timely, and high-quality patient care.


This position oversees daily clinical operations, supervises a multidisciplinary team, and optimizes patient


flow--particularly managing the transition of admitted patients from the ED to inpatient units. The ideal


candidate would be able to foster a culture of clinical excellence, teamwork and patient-centered care.




Requirements:



Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN); Masters preferred Current certifications: Required Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred Current member of the RNAO and BPSO Champion Certification preferred Minimum 5 years of recent acute care experience exposure to both ED and inpatient settings is
preferred.
Clinical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of emergency care practices, medical technologies, and
standards of care.
Knowledge of quality improvement initiatives, patient flow and system navigation across hospital and
community settings and pay for performance program with Ontario Health.
Leadership: Proven ability to inspire, mentor, and guide teams; skilled in setting clear goals and
providing constructive feedback.
Patient-Centered Focus: Committed to enhancing patient experience and outcomes through
collaborative, evidence-based care.
Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication and relationship-building abilities Problem Solving: Analytical thinker with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges. Continuous Learning: Demonstrated commitment to staying current with healthcare advances and
integrating new knowledge into practice.



Duties and responsibilities



Provide frontline leadership support across ED ensuring alignment with NGH standards and policies. Act as a point of contact for staff requiring real-time decision support, coaching, or escalation of clinical
or operational concerns.
Support optimal staffing by working with the clinical practice leaders/charge nurses to coordinate staff
redeployment, breaks, and resource allocation.
Work closely with Clinical Practice Leaders, Charge Nurses, Physicians, and IPAC to ensure patients
receive timely assessments, and diagnostics, treatment.
Lead by example to maintain a safe, supportive, and collaborative work environment that encourages
growth and high performance.
Collaborate with Bed Allocation, Charge Nurses, Admission/Discharge teams and Housekeeping to
ensure timely movement of patients between the ED, inpatient units, and discharge destinations.


Supporting key QIP metrics for the ED and Flow.
Monitor patient acuity and bed capacity in real time, making proactive adjustments to staffing,
workflows, and priorities to maintain safety and service quality.
Implement strategies to minimize delays, improve patient experiences, and reduce ED overcrowding,
which positively impacts patient outcomes, staff workload, and departmental efficiency.
Ensure compliance with Ontario Health P4R metrics, driving continuous improvement in patient
throughput and system performance.
Anticipate and respond to surges in volume, prolonged admissions, or discharge delays. Play a key role in advancing ED leading practices and Pay for Performance deliverables in
collaboration with the Director of the ED and Patient Flow.
Promote adherence to evidence-informed practice, including RNAO Best Practice Guidelines and
Accreditation Canada standards.
Participate in unit-based audits, data collection, and improvement initiatives aligned with strategic
priorities
Champion continuous quality improvement initiatives, using data to identify gaps and implement
evidence-based improvements.
Maintain clear, effective communication with clinical staff, patients, families, and hospital leadership,
ensuring transparency around care plans, patient flow, and departmental goals.
Serve as a communication bridge between frontline teams and management, ensuring timely and
accurate information sharing.
Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and projects focused on enhancing patient safety. Work with leadership to assess, recommend, and implement changes to systems and processes that
improve the overall enhancement of patient flow and Emergency Department efficiently.
Support staff in managing difficult situations and foster open dialogue to address concerns
constructively.
Assist in gathering and interpreting flow or quality-related data to inform decisions Support documentation related to incident reporting and quality metrics. Promote the use of standardized tools and reporting systems to support data integrity.
