Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Functioning within the framework of The Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, the Research Manager reports to the Principal Investigator. The manager is required to work a 35-hour week from Monday to Friday. Workdays may vary in length and may include evening and weekend hours as well as regional, provincial, national and international travel for Rheumatology events and educational opportunities.

The purpose of the position is to provide senior administrative and research coordination to the Principal Investigator. The research manager will ensure smooth and efficient operations of the Principal Investigator\'s research with respect to human resources, finance, procurement, research coordination, etc.

The Research Manager will also be a key liaison between the national and international research groups along with pharmaceutical companies.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Manage the Lupus Registry and Research Program:
  • The main objective of STARLET The SouThern Alberta Registry for Lupus EryThematosus is to monitor the health outcomes of Canadian lupus patients over time, and to identify potential risk factors associated with a poor prognosis
  • In the future, this knowledge will be used to develop national initiatives to assess preventive or therapeutic interventions for high-risk lupus patients. STARLET will also maintain a registry of patient volunteers who consent to being notified regarding new studies, thereby facilitating recruitment into future research projects. Protocols will be submitted under separate cover for ethics approval prior to enrolling patients in such future studies
  • Budgets:
  • Budget information is gathered, analyzed and compiled accurately within timelines
  • Budget allocations, revenues and expenditures are administered effectively for the Principal Investigator
  • Responsible for developing and managing the research project budgets and the associated research accounts. Develops quarterly and annual reports outlining the status of the overall Research program and studies financial activities
  • Reviews contracts, budgets and makes recommendations to Principal Investigator
  • Project Management
  • Assist the Chair in planning, developing, implementing, evaluating and maintaining all research projects
  • Responsible to staying updated and informed with related tri-council regulations, ethnics approval requirements and/or policies, funding requirements, etc.
  • Ensures a high degree of confidentiality, demonstrates discretion, professionalism and good judgement in dealing with sensitive matters
  • Assists with writing grants and proposals for funding requests for research projects and activities with various agencies (CIHR, Alberta Innovates) and pharmaceutical companies
  • Leadership
  • Acts as a coach and mentor in training and development of the team
  • Lead and implement change on the team to support continuous improvement
  • Full Managerial discretion for direct reports, including performance management, discipline, and termination
  • Verify and approve timesheets for all staff members
  • Ensure fixed term appointments are renewed as required
  • Communications/Relationships:
  • Tactfully communicates and liaise with senior-level and high profile individuals at both national and international research groups (SLICC, CaNIOS), along with pharmaceutical companies and the Arthritis Chair regarding potential clinical research projects
  • Communicates with University personnel including Ethics, Human Resources, Research Accounting, Legal and Faculty of Medicine Research Office on related matters
  • Coordinates the compilation, design and production of scientific posters abstracts, and presentations
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters level or above university education - Health related degree an asset. Licensure as a health care professional is not required, though a working knowledge of conditions and terminology is an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of recent, related experience; including minimum 2 years of leadership experience
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Experienced in the development and establishment of large longitudinal patient cohort registries for clinical outcomes research
  • Advanced knowledge of the area of clinical outcomes research including standardized measures for clinical disease activity, damage indexes, patient assessment, and outcome analysis
  • Proficiency with databases, database design, statistical software and electronic medical record programs
  • Holds a superior understanding of the University environment including the Business Administrative System (BAS) including PeopleSoft and eFin
  • Project management experience an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required
  • Tact, diplomacy and professionalism essential
  • Ability to act decisively and to exercise a high degree of initiative, judgment and decision making skills
  • Ability to develop innovative, productive solutions to complex issues and problems, and to make improvements in existing systems and processes
  • Excellent attention to detail
