Reporting to the Clinical Director or Executive Director, the Clinical Psychologist would support the clinical team in program development, research, outcome measurement and direct client care.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Case Reviews & Treatment Planning Support

Conduct diagnostic clarification, test interpretation, and risk assessments by reviewing assessments, files, and client histories. Identify risk factors and support clinicians with risk management planning as needed. Participate in case review meetings for complex clients, providing clinical insight and psychological expertise. Assist clinicians in care/treatment planning and formulation, ensuring plans are informed by biopsychosocial assessments, test measures, and collateral documentation. Support discharge planning and reporting: + Ensure smooth transitions post-treatment by facilitating early engagement with referents/case managers when needed.
+ Assist to organize and schedule discharge case conferences with all stakeholders where needed.
+ Provide recommendations for ongoing trauma processing, SUD treatment, return-to-work (RTW) goals, family therapy, and other necessary follow-ups when needed.
+ Collaborate with National Clinical Team and Atlantic Executive Director and Clinical Manager to ensure high-quality, professional reports that meet referent expectations.
+ Assist in discharge conferences for complex or sensitive cases (e.g., RCMP and current VAC cohorts) when needed.
Join case consultation meetings to offer feedback and recommendations when challenges arise. Support treatment plan adjustments based on evolving client needs and clinical observations.

2. Psychological Assessments & Diagnostic Support

Conduct psychological assessments as needed, in collaboration with Personal Counsellors. + Identify underlying conditions that may impact treatment progress.
+ Provide diagnostic clarity to refine individualized treatment plans.

3. Staff Training & Clinical Development

Deliver targeted training on trauma-informed care, PTSD treatment, and SUD interventions, with a focus on the unique stressors and occupational challenges faced by first responders and military personnel. Training topics include: + Sanctuary Harm
+ Moral Injury & Moral Distress
+ Survivor Guilt
+ Return-to-Work (RTW), Restrictions & Fitness for Duty
+ Psychological Safety in the Workplace
+ Military & First Responder Cultures
+ RCMP Culture
+ Understanding challenges for First-Responders
Educate clinicians on psychological assessments--when to refer, how to interpret results, and how to integrate findings into treatment. Develop case-based learning opportunities to enhance clinical decision-making through real-world scenarios.

4. Cross-Site Collaboration & Best Practices Integration

Facilitate collaborative discussions between Guardians and BWNS to align clinical approaches and share insights. Identify and implement best practices in psychological treatment for military personnel and first responders. Work with leadership to enhance measurement-based care strategies, ensuring continuous evaluation of program effectiveness. Support research and program evaluation initiatives as needed.

Required Credentials

Education & Licensing

+ Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or a related field preferred
+ Registered Psychologist (R. Psych.) or Licensed Psychologist (C. Psych.) with a regulatory body in Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology)

Clinical Experience

+ Experience in trauma-focused therapy, addiction treatment, and/or inpatient mental health care
+ Experience working with military personnel, RCMP, first responders, or veterans preferred
+ Familiarity with co-occurring disorders (PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, moral injury, etc.)

Specialized Training & Certifications Preferred

Trauma & PTSD Treatment:

- Certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
- Trained in Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) or Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Addictions Treatment:

- Certification in Substance Use and Addiction Treatment (e.g., Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation - CACCF)
- Experience with Harm Reduction, Abstinence-Based, and/or 12-Step Approaches
+

Military & First Responder-Specific Training:

- Certified in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) for sleep-related trauma issues
- Knowledge of Operational Stress Injury (OSI) Clinics or Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Programs
- Familiarity with Moral Injury Treatment Models

Suicide Prevention & Crisis Intervention:

- ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) or equivalent crisis intervention training

Preferred Attributes & Additional Qualifications

Experience in a Multidisciplinary Setting (collaborating with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and addiction counselors) Knowledge of Psychological Assessments (e.g., MMPI-2, PCL-5, CAPS-5 for PTSD diagnosis) Strong Understanding of Military & First Responder Culture (e.g., shift work challenges, hypervigilance, stigma around seeking help) Training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
