Job Summary
This is a highly responsible regional Clinical Psychology position providing specialized and advanced psychology services to seniors and individuals with cognitive impairments, physical disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses who are residents in Long Term Care facilities in St. John\'s.The development, implementation and monitoring of a coordinated mental health service delivery process for residents with a full range of mental health needs is a critical role for this position.

The Psychologist must consult with management, medical, nursing and allied health staff within Long Term Care and the Eastern Health Mental Health Program to assess the mental health needs of residents; determine service needs; develop strategies for meeting these needs; direct the development of a coordinated mental health referral process within Long Term Care; and monitor this process for efficiency.
This position provides a full range of psychological services, including psychological assessments, test administration and interpretation, diagnosis and prognosis, intensive psychotherapy and psycho education for staff working with this population. Participation in the admission process for Long Term Care via assessment of resident mental health and cognitive status, and participation in the development of appropriate interventions, recommending evidence - based mental health service strategies for Eastern Health Long Term Care in consultation with regional and provincial resources.
It is a sole charge position for Long Term Care St. John\'s that is unique within the province.
This position reports to the Regional Manager Allied Health. This position maintains accountability for professional integrity issues to the Professional Practice Consultant for the discipline.

Job Demands

Occasionally, there is lifting or physical strength required, less than 10 lbs for files, boxes, or equipment.
Regularly sits; occasionally works in awkward/cramped positions, and stands. The psychologist may provide services in conjunction with other disciplines and as such, may be required to sit or stand in alternative environments (e.g. physiotherapy pool, occupational therapy bathroom).
Uses fine finger/precision work when on the computer and visual concentration is required when in sessions with patients (i.e. reviewing patient charts/notes, tests and for documenting work, and when reading or researching information).
Visual concentration is required to interpret patient observations and integrate into patient evaluation.
Auditory concentration is constantly required in sessions with patients to listen attentively, to be alert and to obtain and interpret information correctly.
A higher than normal level of attentiveness is required when assessing high risk patients.
Travel to outlying regions is required.

Job Qualifications
Graduation with an approved/recognized Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology is required.
Registration or provisional registration with Newfoundland and Labrador Psychology Board is required.
Graduate course work and supervised experience in psychological assessment, particularly cognitive and adaptive functioning assessment, and treatment with individuals.
Exhibited strong communication, program development and evaluation skills.
Possessed proven analytical, critical reasoning, collaboration, problem solving, decision-making and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to direct, supervise and mentor students.
Demonstrated ability to effectively translate and communicate knowledge in the specialized area of psychology practice to others.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interprofessional environment and provide clinical consultation.
Ability to work autonomously, prioritizing caseloads and client needs.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a constructive working rapport with clients.
Demonstrated strong awareness of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.

  • Current internal Clinical Psychologist who possess an approved/recognized Master Degree in Clinical Psychology will be considered for this position.
