Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Nursing and Patient Experience, this position is responsible for providing innovative leadership ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care within the Pre-operative, In-patient and Post-operative surgical care services.
The Inpatient Care Unit, Manager, works in close collaboration with the Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) for the surgical program to maintain and enhance clinical practice standards, and partners with the Operating Room Services Manager to ensure continuity of care.
Qualifications:
Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BScN) is required.
Master's degree in nursing, business, management, or related health care field, preferred.
Minimum 3 years in leadership or management role in a unionized environment.
Minimum 5 years clinical experience in acute care setting of medical-surgical.
Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Participated or led Accreditation.
Financial and business acumen.
Computer proficiency in MS Office, EMR and related technology.
Strong knowledge of surgical workflows, infection control, and regulatory standards.
Excellent interpersonal skills in conflict management and building relationships.
Project management skills.
Ability to implement change in a positive, sensitive and forward-thinking manner.
Demonstrated commitment to holding self and others accountable to high standards.
Excellent judgment with an ability to act decisively.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Quality & Safety
Identify and implement quality indicators, to achieve compliance with best practices, Accreditation standards, policies, and procedures. i.e. IPAC, preventative maintenance.
Carry out risk management and patient safety activities, such as audits.
Monitor patient sensitive quality indicators such as SSI, and patient satisfaction score.
Follow up on patient incidents and participate in Quality-of-Care Reviews as needed.
Clinical & Patient Care Management
Implement clinical protocols, standards of practice to meet best practices in patient care.
Ensure safe and effective patient flow, including timely admissions, discharges, and transfers, in coordination with the Operating Room and other related departments.
Ensure appropriate staffing compliment aligned to patient care needs and acuity.
Human Resources
Manage all aspects of human resources and labour relation functions including staff scheduling, performance evaluations, progressive discipline, recruitment, and professional development.
Mentor and support staff development and continuing education opportunities, creating a supportive environment for new hires and students.
Participate in the collective bargaining as required.
Ensure Occupational Health and Safety standards are applied to protect staff safety.
Financial Management
Participate in the development and management of the departmental budget, including capital equipment and supply cost control.
Participate in monthly financial reviews with Director of Nursing and Patient Experience to monitor, develop strategies, and follow through on action items to ensure budget targets are met.
Administrative Leadership & Communications
Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, administrative staff and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient flow and minimize delays or cancellations.
Manage bed utilization, and patient flow to optimize efficiency and quality outcomes.
Oversee payroll.
Facilitate modified work, and return to work meetings by seeking input from the CPL.
Lead and or participate in committee work, departmental specific or hospital wide.
Hours of Work:
This is a regular full-time management position that requires flexibility with regards to hours of work based on operational needs, as part of the Nursing management team, with typical hours of work as 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and alternate Saturdays and on-call.
