Position Description

As a Clinical Extern at SickKids, you will be a partner in the delivery of child-and family centered care, alongside a diverse interprofessional care team.


Externs work across all Inpatient, Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department areas under Registered Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist supervision and are supported by a central and local team.

What do we do in the Clinical Extern Program?




The Clinical Extern Program is the portfolio that advances child and family-centred care by supporting Clinical Extern onboarding, role development, and ongoing mentorship. We strive to advance Extern engagement in clinical care through partnership with local clinical teams and the Extern workforce.


The central program team leads a robust orientation, comprised of hands-on skills, simulation and evidence-based learning that sets new hire externs up to deliver quality patient care in their local unit. The Program team also partners with the local leadership teams to ensure seamless integration into the care environment, ongoing support, and mentorship.

Here's What You'll Get to Do



Deliver child and family-centred care by working as an Unregulated Care Provider Assist the Registered Nurse or Registered Respiratory Therapist in developing and implementing a plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family caregivers and the interprofessional team Participate in ongoing learning and development by participating in self-reflection, continued learning opportunities, and performance review processes

Here's What You'll Need



Completion of a minimum of 50% (i.e., Entering the second year of a two-year program, or third year of a four-year program) in one of the following accredited programs. Please note 2026 grads are not eligible.


+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing
+ Master of Science in Occupational Therapy
+ Master of Science in Physiotherapy
+ Respiratory Therapy Diploma program
A current BCLS certificate Ability to sustain employment during the academic year as outlined in the employment details below Experience demonstrating accountability in a paid work or volunteer capacity Comfort building relationships with other clinical team members, patients, and family caregivers Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration with others Skill in time management and navigating multiple competing demands Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of care and collaboration

Assets



Experience with children and youth, such as placements, camp experience, or volunteering Experience in an acute care hospital setting

Employment Type:



Fixed-term contract $20.60 hourly Starting at 0.8 FTE and will reduce to 0.3 FTE in September. Combination of days, nights, weekends at both 8- and 12-hour shift lengths. Starting either

What is the selection and interview process?

Which types of care activities do Externs typically perform?




All Clinical Externs work under the direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist when providing care. Externs may support a group of patients, one patient or a particular area of the unit based on the patient care needs each shift. Externs will never be left solely accountable for a patient, assignment or unit. Some common care activities include but are not limited to:

Vital signs Child and Family Caregiver respite, support, and navigation Enteral feeding support IV-line preparation and set up General support for safe lift, transfers and activities of daily living Child and infant feeding, general care and bathing Quality and safety initiative support Safety check completion and equipment set up Supporting evidence-based care bundles to prevent Central- line associated blood stream infections, Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections, Peripheral IV related injuries and other safety priorities
