Summary of responsibilities

A Clinical Extern Mentor, Supports clinical externs (CE) with staffing, scheduling, guidance, support, leadership, education, and visibility. They are also available to support new nurses transition into practice. They are experienced, professional, and knowledgeable in the clinical environment & current in nursing practice. This position is engaging for staff and will facilitate learning in the clinical setting.

The Clinical Extern Mentor will be responsible for coordinating and supporting clinical externs and new nurses on clinical units at CCH. This position will also assist the new nurse to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for practice within the clinical environment as a beginning level nurse. The clinical facilitator will act as a professional role model for new nurses and is responsible for maintaining positive relationships with the various teams to enhance the learning experience.

Clinical facilitators will have highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic and a commitment to research/ evidence-based practice.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities and activities of the clinical extern (CE) - Mentor role include the following:
  • Taking a learner-centred approach, being patient and supportive of CE & new nurse learning
  • Works collaboratively with CEs & new nurses to identify and develop learning goals specific to their needs, review expectations and required competencies in clinical areas
  • Become familiar with the workflows of the clinical area in which coordination is undertaken
  • Actively facilitating learning opportunities that are relevant to the CE & new nurse and clinical unit learning objectives/competencies
  • Liaising and consulting regularly with the Clinical Nurse Educator on clinical units to facilitate effective integration of theory with practice and achievement of expected outcomes
  • Act as a coach and mentor for new nurse who will provide ongoing support ensuring continued professional growth and integration into the CCH family
  • Facilitates socialization of the new & CE nurse into the team and the culture of the unit
  • Promote a mentoring environment- empowering new nurse to ask questions
  • Assisting the CE & new nurse with their development of communication, problem solving, clinical and professional skills
  • Working alongside of the CE & new nurse as they demonstrate components of their practice
  • Responding positively to the immediate concerns and needs of the CE & new nurse and other team members if unforeseen problems arise
  • Conduct pre-briefing and debriefing sessions with CE & new nurse
  • Providing regular feedback, both formative and summative to new nurse, buddy nurse and Nurse Educator about the learner\'s performance
  • Facilitate clinical skills hands-on experience and other professional development activities for learners

  • Medication admission
  • Scenarios based learning
  • Basic Nursing skills
  • Foley insertion
  • Dialysis care- med admin what meds to give in dialysis and not
  • Physical layout of department
  • Patient flow
  • Location of Equipment- including crash cart, weight scales, crash cart, bladder scanner etc.
  • Certification of POCT Devices (i.e. Urine POCT Machine, Glucometer)
  • Review and enroll new staff into the Automatic Drug Cabinets (ADU)
  • Review IV pumps & training
  • Review Electronic Resources (Policy & Procedure, Elsevier, SharePoint, Lexicomp)
  • Review Venipuncture and Blood Collection
  • Review IV therapy/IV initiation
  • Review Orthopaedic Device Application
  • Central line access
  • Insulin pen administration
  • CCRT calling criteria & code blue/pink process
  • Transfer of Accountability/Handoff
Requirements of the job
  • A Registered Nurse (RN) with current clinical expertise in nursing skills
  • At least 2-3 years\' experience in Acute Medicine and/Surgery preferred. May be expert retired
  • Excellent professional role modeling & communications ability
  • Experience in clinical education/teaching of undergraduate nursing students, or other relevant teaching experience preferred
