About the Opportunity

The CB Redevelopment Project is an initiative to realign care and services in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The Project includes multiple complex sub-projects including renovations and new construction over four separate sites: Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Glace Bay General Hospital, Harborview Hospital, a new Community Health Center and Long Term Care facility in both New Waterford and the Northside area. There will also be a new laundry facility constructed on the Northside. Research and academic mandates all need to be addressed in the planning, design and construction phases.

Reporting directly to the Director, Infrastructure - CB Redevelopment, the Clinical Engineer has responsibility for the provision of clinical/biomedical engineering expertise to support planning and clinical equipment procurement across the sub-projects of the larger Redevelopment project. The Clinical Engineer serves as consultant, interpreting the applied physics of technologies used as well as the technology/physiology interaction/implications for clinicians and general staff for optimization of technology use, health technology assessment, risk management, etc. The Clinical Engineer is specifically responsible to support planning and clinical equipment procurement for the various CB Redevelopment Projects. The Clinical Engineer will provide related advice concerning biomedical preventive maintenance program(s); equipment/technology management and assessment; risk management; electrical and medical gas distribution with respect to clinical use; and other duties as required.

Specific Accountabilities

Include:

  • Contribute to the development of and/or review of clinical equipment specifications.
  • Contribute to the development of and/or review of project-specific output specifications.
  • Review proposed space designs and provide advice related to electrical, plumbing and medical gas distribution and other relevant systems that support clinical equipment.
  • Provide electrical safety consultation
  • Provide electromagnetic interference consultation
  • As a member of the CB Redevelopment team, work closely with government partners (TIR, ISD, DHW) as required throughout the planning and procurement phases of clinical equipment.
  • Participate on related committees/work groups as required.
  • Participate on the development and evaluation of RFPs as required.
  • Work in collaboration with Clinical Program leaders and others to assess the current state of clinical equipment for potential transfer to new facilities. Work with Clinical Program leaders and the CBI Redevelopment team to plan and execute the transfer of equipment where applicable.
  • Oversee the clinical equipment, onboarding, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Participate on related committees/work groups as required
  • Collaborate with NSH Biomedical Engineering to develop specifications; to ensure equipment safety and efficacy; to ensure adherence to Biomedical related standards, codes, policies and procedures; and to determine Biomedical Engineering service related needs such as training, tools and documentation.
About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
  • Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited engineering program, specializing in biomedical, electrical, or mechanical engineering (or a related engineering field)
  • Four years\' experience (or equivalent) in a clinical setting.
  • Registration with Engineers Nova Scotia as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible to be registered with Engineers Nova Scotia required within 6 months of hire.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Master\'s degree in clinical engineering, biomedical instrumentation, or related fields is a key asset
  • Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) designation is an asset
  • Experience developing technical specifications is an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills required, especially with computerized maintenance management systems, database applications, and quality assurance/risk management programs
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • High level of judgment and initiative required with strong problem-solving and trouble-shooting abilities
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Previous team leadership and project management experience would be an asset.

  • Full-Time Long Assignment / 100% / 75 Hours Bi-weekly
  • Start as soon as possible, with an estimated end date of July 2028
Compensation and Incentives

$41.48 - $51.85 Hourly
