Job Description

Located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Caring Hearts is a non-profit charity organization established in 1983 that provides a wide range of grief, loss, and trauma-informed education programs, counselling services, and support groups providing a place of comfort in difficult times. With the goal of offering connection, understanding, and belonging to help decrease the loneliness and isolation that grief and trauma can create, we are seeking two experienced registered Counsellors to partner with our Education Director to implement our services and supports.

The Caring Hearts Counsellors will provide clinical support, advocacy, and counselling services to individuals, families, and groups affected by grief, trauma, traumatic loss, and life transitions. Our ideal candidate will be a compassionate practitioner who demonstrates cultural humility, empathy, demonstrates strong clinical judgement, and understands the impacts of intergenerational trauma affecting Indigenous peoples within a client-centered framework.

Functions of the position



The Counsellors will be responsible for providing trauma-informed counselling, case management, and advocacy within a strengths-based, and community-focused framework with the following key responsibilities:

Deliver trauma-informed, culturally informed counselling services to individuals, families, and groups including a distinct focus on clients from Indigenous communities;

Develop and implement individualized care plans, integrating traditional healing practices where appropriate and fostering inclusivity;

Collaborate with community agencies, Indigenous organizations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and health service providers to coordinate holistic supports;

Provide program coordination of a variety of support groups;

Partner with Education Director to conduct internal and external needs assessment to develop and tailor services to meet community needs and ensure all programming aligns with the organization's purpose, vision, and values;

Support the Education Director as required to design workshops and training sessions for adult learners, incorporating trauma-informed practices addressing grief, loss, and trauma;

Facilitate and lead workshops, seminars, and support groups, including consideration for adults with diverse learning styles and needs;

Maintain thorough, confidential case documentation and reports consistent with professional and organizational standards;

Uphold ethical standards of practice in accordance with your professional governing body.

Qualifications and experience to be successful in the position



The Counsellors will require experience in the following skills and capabilities:

Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles and practices;

Demonstrated experience in trauma and loss counselling and grief support;

Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous cultures, traditions, and the effects of intergenerational trauma;

Ability to apply trauma-informed and culturally safe frameworks in practice;

Knowledge of grief, trauma, and mental health supports;

Exceptional group facilitation, public speaking, and presentation skills;

Ability to approach challenging situations with optimism and resilience to work with individuals experiencing grief, loss, and trauma;

Ability to research, learn, and adapt;

Ability to build and maintain respectful and trusting relationships with a diverse range of individuals and groups;

Ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively as a team member;

Excellent organizational skills;

Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;

Legal authorization to work in Canada on an unrestricted basis.

Typically, the knowledge and capabilities required to be successful in this role is achieved through a bachelor's or master's degree in social work (BSW/MSW), Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work (BISW) or a master's degree in counselling psychology, or educational psychology with a minimum of 5 years' direct, supervised counselling experience. It would be a strong asset to have additional certification in trauma-informed care and/or grief counselling, and training in Mental Health First Aid. The successful candidate must be registered and in good standing with their recognized professional governing body.

Other considerations to be successful:



The Counsellors will sometimes work evenings or weekends, however, flexibility in working hours will be provided in consideration of these requirements. In addition, there is a medium level requirement to travel throughout the province of Saskatchewan which will require a valid Class 5 driver's license.
