Your Opportunity:We are currently looking for a Full Time Neurosurgery Clinical Assistant to join our team at the Neurosurgery Spine Triage and Assessment Clinic (STAC), Foothills Medical Centre located in Calgary, Alberta. Clinical Assistants are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Clinical Neurosciences functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals, making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Clinical Assistants are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position, you will deliver care to patients at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) site. The Clinical Assistant will provide Neurosurgical outpatient assessments for patients referred for spine conditions during weekdays at FMC.Description:The clinical assistant (CA) will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team with three other spine physicians (CA\'s) in close collaboration with Neurosurgeons and Physiatrists as well as supporting administrative and research personnel. The responsibilities of the clinical assistant include but are not limited to reviewing and triaging referrals, taking detailed history from the patient, performing a physical and neurological examination, reviewing medical records and summarizing relevant information and making a diagnosis, ordering diagnostic tests, arranging for consultations and following up on results, arranging appropriate follow-up investigations and clinic visits, approach patients regarding research studies and participate in clinical and quality-improvement initiatives. It is anticipated that once the probationary period is complete, the clinical assistant will evaluate 5-10 patients per day under the supervision of a staff Neurosurgeon and Physiatrist. Only those demonstrating the strongest qualifications will be contacted for an interview.

Required Qualifications:Eligibility to work in Canada (e.g. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with open work permits). English Language Proficiency. As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have taken the Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), achieving a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the components. Test results must be certified (notarized) by a Notary Public or any other government-authorized entity. Exemptions are granted based on guidelines set out on the CPSA website (http://www.cpsa.ca/language-proficiency/). Medical Degree and Transcripts. Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school located outside of Canada and the USA, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) - International Medical Directory (IMD). Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have completed at least one full year of hands-on training (outside of Canada and the USA) after having completed their undergraduate medical training, with no exceptions. Specialty training must show evidence of being hands-on and supervised for it to meet this requirement.
Additional Required Qualifications:Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1). Applicants must have passed the MCCQE1 before application. Hold registration for supervised practice with the CPSA under the Limited Practice Registry. Candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae and Clinical Assistant Eligibility Pre-Screen Letter from AHS with their application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant will be responsible for registering and maintaining professional licensure with the CPSA. Clinical Assistants must meet certain licensure requirements; therefore AHS provides a pre-screening process to help ensure interested individuals satisfy the minimum requirements to be eligible for registration by the CPSA. Within the last three years, physicians need to have practiced independently, been in a regulated, supervised practice (in a role where the physician was not the most responsible physician) or been a part of a continuous postgraduate training program for a minimum of one year in the discipline you want to enter in Alberta. Fellowship training, community service, public service, national service, Medical Officer posts and practice experience do not fulfil this requirement.
Preferred Qualifications:It is anticipated this will be a highly competitive job posting.
