The MIABC is looking for an energetic, motivated, and career-minded Claims Examiner. The MIABC is a member-owned non-profit insurance reciprocal that provides liability coverage to over 168 local governments in British Columbia, and property and ancillary coverage to over half of our members.
Job Duties:
Investigates and manages claims directly or through independent adjusters.
Communicates promptly with members, claimants, and their representatives about claim developments.
Instructs and coordinates with adjusters, consultants, and legal counsel as needed.
Processes claims documentation efficiently, ensuring accurate file setup and timely updates to members per MIABC standards.
Collects and analyses facts to assess liability and quantify losses or damages.
Posts reserves and manages litigation budgets according to MIABC policies and procedures.
Oversees litigation, instructs legal counsel, attends mediations, and negotiates or denies settlements directly or through counsel/adjusters.
Provides regular updates to the Manager of Claims on significant losses.
Manages all aspects of file administration, including opening, closing, and maintaining pending claims.
Processes payments and invoices from service providers.
Keeps up to date on industry and internal policy changes.
Visits members, attends conferences, and represents MIABC at industry events.
Identifies and reports claims issues for risk management support to Member Services.
Ensures compliance with MIABC policies and procedures.
Participates in committees as required by the Manager of Claims.
Maintains confidentiality.
Other miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned
Preferred qualifications include:
3-10 years of claims experience.
Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation is preferred.
Litigation process expertise is an asset.
Experience in POED, law enforcement liability, environmental liability, building and land use liability, or other local government specialty claims is an asset.
Strong time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple files and meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with a focus on customer service.
Exceptional attention to detail, analytical ability, and organizational skills.
Proven diplomacy, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

$65,280-$99,058 depending on experience.
