Skills and Qualifications
A Level 3 Designer will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience, and have successfully passed through Levels 1 and 2 in good standing. A Level 3 Designer will be working more independently and towards gaining additional experience and knowledge, with more complicated engineering projects. Engineering work will be completed correctly and reliance on senior engineers for advice will start to diminish. Experience, professional development and upgrading skills are the main attributes of these levels. Candidate will have strong technical design skills with problem solving abilities and academic knowledge of structural concepts and building systems, and extensive knowledge of building code and building component elements related to the industry. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in addition to time management skills, have been developed. Comprehensive knowledge of Parts 4 and 9 of the Ontario Building Code, in addition to other local and national building codes, is expected. Continuing education as part of the Professional Development program will also be expected. In addition, Level 3 candidates must have previously obtained BCIN designations for Legal and Structural, and will work towards obtaining P.Eng. designation status for Design Level 5.
Travel will be required, primarily in Southern Ontario, and the candidate must have a valid Ontario Driver’s License and their own vehicle.
Level 3 duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform independent field measure-ups during design stages
  • Perform site visits during construction and prepare site visit reports
  • Complete more complex engineering calculations for review by others, with less reliance on senior engineers
  • Prepare design drawings using CAD under minimal directions of others
  • Utilize engineering analysis software under minimal direction of others
  • Review fabrication drawings
  • Prepare permit application documentation and submit to City officials, manage building permit application process
  • Prepare technical specifications under minimal direction of others
  • Prepare construction change documents for review under minimal direction of others
  • Attend tender and project meetings
  • Prepare engineering feasibility reports and/or BCA reports under supervision of others
  • Start to develop project schedules in MS Project
  • Develop engineering design aids to introduce efficiencies into daily work and processes

Compensation Level Annual Salary
3 $55,000 - $60,000
