Course code and title: CIN380H1S - Indigenous Cinema
Course description: Indigenous Cinema has been creating Visual Sovereignty, resisting colonialism, revealing strategies for survival, and carving out a space in global cinema to speak to other Indigenous viewers and find the similarities between us. In this course we will reflect on Indigenous representations from outsiders, and the subsequent development of Indigenous Cinema by Indigenous people around the world. Through screenings, readings, discussions, and writing assignments, the students will gain an understanding of the unique histories and films of Indigenous people from North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Northern Europe. By the end of this course students will be able to articulate the similar ways colonization has affected Indigenous people, and the unique ways Indigenous filmmakers represent resistance, resurgence and resillience.

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
Sessional Lecturer I, Long Term: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in Cinema/Film/Media required.
  • Experience teaching Indigenous Cinema at the university level.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Strong track record of work on Indigenous Cinema.
Description of duties: The Sessional Lecturer will follow the broad outline of the syllabus that has been established for the course, using any textbooks/films that may have been ordered. Revisions and/or updates to the curriculum should be discussed with the Director. They will lecture, grade assignments, hold office hours each week, and answer queries by email or appointment.
