Description:

The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a two-year appointment, renewable as funding allows.

At the (LW Lab) we build some of the world\xe2\x80\x99s largest radio correlators. Under the general direction of Prof. Keith Vanderlinde, the responsibilities of this position centre around design and implementation of high-throughput signal processing software for use on the Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector (CHORD)\xe2\x80\x99s GPU-based correlator and beamformer, and on outlying antenna stations. The CHORD correlator will continuously process ~10 Tb/s of radio data, performing Peta-scale processing on a dedicated supercomputer cluster with 100+ GPUs and 1000+ CPU cores. With this position you will have the opportunity to work with cutting edge software and hardware, contribute to open-source software projects, and help to enable groundbreaking scientific discoveries. This position interacts with and supports other members of the CHORD collaboration, located at several universities across Canada & the US. In all these activities, there is the expectation that the appointee will supervise the work of undergraduates and graduate students.

The appointment is for two years, renewable for at least another two and further as funding allows. The start date is July 1, 2023 or as mutually agreed.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM:

EDUCATION:

PhD or equivalent certification in astrophysics, astronomy, physics, computer engineering or computer science

EXPERIENCE:

Experience organizing a team of student researchers on complex data analyses.

At least one year of relevant postdoctoral experience

Some understanding of radio astronomical instrumentation and polarization calibration

Demonstrable contributions to scientific research in the capacity of high-performance computing, high-level distributed software, or high-throughput signal processing software.

Experience developing research processes

Experience contributing to large-scale astrophysics research

Demonstrated track record of academic and/or research excellence

Experience with analyzing, designing, testing, installing, debugging, modifying, upgrading, operating and maintaining custom software environments.

Experience working with industry standard development tools (e.g git) and programming best practices.

Experience working in Linux/Unix based heterogeneous and massively parallel computing environments.

SKILLS:

Advanced skills in radio interferometry, large-scale distributed data processing, radio astronomy pipelines or transient science

Demonstrated excellence at scientific writing and publishing

Demonstrated ability to work with students

Demonstrated ability to handle several tasks, and effectively prioritize and meet multiple deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team

OTHER:

Assets (non-essential)

Experience with GPU programming (CUDA or OpenCL).

Experience with massively-parallel computation.

Experience with designing REST APIs.

Experience managing continuous integration/regression testing.

Experience with event driven programming models.

Familiarity with using Docker containers.
